Do you get promoted for doing your job well, or for being in the right place at the right time? The second one seems to be the right one from what I've noticed, which, to be honest su-ks.

I learned the hard way it’s not all about your work - hard work is almost a prerequisite. A lot of us work hard but you need to find way to stand out.
The reality it’s 1/3 hard work 1/3 your network and 1/3 your brand (percentage changes depending on company and group) And then it’s about luck - but you need all three to take advantage of opportunity.
And yes definately helps to be in a right place at the right time.
If you’re union you can be d-mb and lazy as sh-t, all you need to do is have seniority and they’ll get you in one of those cushy jobs. Maybe after 20 years.

No. You get more work piled on you. Your dishonest peers will do less.
definitely you dont get paid for merit at Verizon. You can win multiple winners circle and presidents cabinet but you will be passed on because you are not a certain race or color.

Those days of hoping to get promoted for doing your job well, while continuing in your comfort zone, are OVER. You need to skill-up, consistently perform above your job description and wait for the next opportunity in your department or other business units (career mobility) to apply for.
Skill up to just keep job and get paid "fair market value"

It's all about the impression those who are hiring have about you. Whether you work hard or not or are in the right place or not it's something that has generated a favorable opinion of you.
The biggest issue is continuity above you. Your boss (and maybe their boss and maybe THEIR boss) all have to stay in place long enough for HR to do its job.
