Nike Leadership: Failing at a Level Most Employees Would Be Fired For

Watching Nike’s leadership discuss “winning” while the stock collapses from roughly $177 to $38 is like watching the captain of the Titanic accept an award for improving access to ocean views.

These people inherited the Swoosh, one of the most recognizable and valuable symbols in human history and somehow turned it into a case study in executive arrogance, strategic confusion and highly compensated mediocrity. It is genuinely impressive. Most people could not damage a brand this powerful without actively trying.

But accountability at Nike apparently works differently depending on your salary. When employees struggle, they are “low performers” who must be eliminated. When executives erase billions in shareholder value, weaken the marketplace and lose ground to smaller competitors, they receive bonuses, consultants and another opportunity to reorganize everyone beneath them.

Then comes the corporate theater: “Win Now.” “Sport Offense.” “Consumer-led.” “Future growth.” A seemingly endless vocabulary designed to disguise the inconvenient fact that the people constantly lecturing everyone about excellence have delivered one of the least excellent performances in Nike’s history.

The employees who actually designed, engineered, developed and delivered the product were treated as expenses. The executives who repeatedly misread the market were treated as visionaries. Now the share price provides the performance review leadership was apparently too important to receive.

From $177 to $38.

Just do it? They just did it, to themselves.

Nike does not suffer from a shortage of talent. It suffers from a surplus of executives who confuse authority with intelligence, meetings with progress and surviving their own failures with leadership.

The Swoosh deserves better. Employees deserved better. Shareholders deserved better.

But please, tell us again how eliminating more working people will finally correct the decisions made by the untouchable geniuses at the top.

Almost spot-on but I would change this sentence “When employees struggle, they are “low performers” who must be eliminated” to say “when employees point out the problems with leaderships’ decisions, they must be eliminated.”

@k8 strangely, Tariff refunds were not the driver behind PSP (they weren't even received when it was decided)

@dm

PSP results
• Global: 74%
• APLA: 60%
• EMEA: 56%
• Greater China: 56%
• North America: 92%

All likely made possible by tariff refunds

No one ever gets fired
People get laid off due to politics and algorithms
There’s no accountability

Everyday run into something that should take two minutes taking two hours (lack of access, goes through multiple trans for approvals, and is nobody with the know how to get ‘er done), and every day 1/2 of it is burned (at least) on the same stupid repeat issues that the owners of the process or system will not address and nobody is holding them accountable. It has to be at least this bad elsewhere. When is someone going to step in and say ‘enough’? When is someone at high enough of a level to make changes going to start? There are good people here, but they’re all too afraid to speak up. Unleash potential, don’t constrain it. Please … Please … get rid of the Vendors su-king the life and $$$ out of this company. They are serving themselves, bad mouthing good employees, and refusing to listen to anyone or be accountable to anyone but themselves. Is so rampant now, and so disgusting, that person after person tells me they can’t stand it anymore and are leaving the first chance they get.

Agreed. Too many people doing favors to get the leadership jobs they aren’t even qualified for.

No winning with Nike. No winning with Converse. No winning with Jordan.
Writing is on the wall.

Sweeping leadership changes are definitely needed.

I am retired now. Could you share the final call on PSP bonuses and average salary increases?

Definitely fairly assessed. I feel like this Leadership team is trying to drive optimism out of air. We shouldn't be optimistic... but we shouldn't be negative. We need to be real and we're lacking that understanding.

We keep 'waiting' for someone to generate the shot and 'score', but maybe we need to start asking ourselves what are the opponents weaknesses and how we can innovate the game.
