Thread regarding Fannie Mae layoffs

I learn a new term today -horizontal hostility

Looking at recent threads, I couldn't help but notice everyone turning on each other—SF vs. MF vs. Tech, hybrid vs. remote, first line vs. 2nd vs. 3rd line, people of a certain ethnicity vs. others, you name it. Meanwhile, the people actually pulling the strings and causing this mess get a free pass while we tear each other apart.
I was curious if there’s an actual psychological or organizational term for this dynamic, so I ran it through AI. Here is a quick breakdown of Horizontal Hostility (or lateral violence):

“When a toxic leader or broken system holds power, self-preservation ends up destroying group solidarity. Because confronting the real source of the threat feels useless or risky, people turn their frustration inward on their peers instead. By scapegoating colleagues or hoping someone else absorbs management's wrath, people try to buy temporary safety. This dynamic is often fueled by leadership using divide-and-conquer tactics—keeping everyone fearful, fragmented, and fighting amongst themselves so no one unites against the actual problem.”

Classic divide and conquer. Let's stop taking the bait and keeping the heat off the people who actually caused this.

How about I’ll just keep being entitled to my opinions and views. All those groups of specific ethnicity hiring each other yeah we could do less of that. And remote fellas yeah if I’m coming in and living in high cost of living area why not them lol

@OP Reason is simple. Boss and their gang of stupid yes men were in comfort zone selling the fake story. Now boss is shown the door, yes men are sacred and pointing out the other gang and the boss of that gang. All gangs were in harmony so far with an unwritten rulebook n understanding to not hurt each other. Now that one gang is hurt, in order to survive, it's trying to hurt the other gang. No one dividing them. There was a fake unity all these years. It's gonna a be ugly thing going forward

@az

Exactly. I like some people in the second line and audit teams and have productive relationships with them. But many (including notably 2nd line leadership) not so much.

@OP this is a good observation. I’ve left multiple companies as workplaces turned toxic in my career and will tell you the result is always the same whether I quit or was laid off: relief. It’s an understatement that all of that takes a toll mentally and physically. In the moment it all seems necessary to stay in the fight to keep the income, but after the fact I’ll feel relieved to be done with it.

@OP Not everything expressed in these threads is baseless. A lot of it stems from real frustration and acute observation of everyday realities.

Management to me is more paranoid, less jobs for them as they are even more niche than the associate and lead level. They will struggle to find a similar management job. So what I see happens is they start to control what they can and micro-manage and do anything to look "good". Many won't look good cause they don't have much for skills, so they try and make up for it other ways by appearing important. Start being overly critical or come up with some stupid idea that everyone is too scared to say anything negative about...and then they look important.
When we went back to the office a lot of middle management was about getting their people in the office and a higher percentage...that is what they thought made them look good not actually doing work.
This is all common when companies restructure or reorganize, everyone just protects themselves and often throwing others under the bus. That is why after this is all done they will be left with nothing but "yes" people too scared to say anything. At this point its a race to the bottom. Then there is my favorite when they cut people and say that those left are there because they are all the smartest and best workers...which is mostly false.
The company has been fragile and had issues for awhile; all these layoffs and scare tactics just showed you what many people there were really like the entire time.
