Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Trying to stay marketable

I try to remain marketable, but I get the feeling that my skills are atrophying in this company. Honestly, is it difficult for you to keep all technical skills up to date here?

Do any of the directors, team leads and people in upper management really have the technical skills to keep surviving these cuts? it's not the technical skills that will save you. Its the cut throat narcissistic personalities that will save you in this company.

why you stressing about something outside your control, use Att as a stepping stone for your next job or career, use their tools, their programs learn on their dime, take advantage of tution reimbursement, networking, etc, and used them on your resume, don't go the extra mile, att only cares about their shareholders, soooo you do the same, care only about your bonus, your overtime and your pto.

@2qre+1m17LyKz is exactly right. i know some groups even hire contractors just to string them along knowing they will be cut to save their own later on.

Last in first out. LIFO, remember this acronym, it will come in handy. Skillet be damned.

Call it what it is, not an outsider, it's a interloper.

I want to add to what @1hdn+1m17LyKz posted.
Even if you upskill highly sought after skills and by chance you are lucky enough to move into a new role, or into a new role into a new group, that group will make sure you are treated like cr-p, get the cr-ppy work assignments, treat you with contempt and disdain because you're an "outsider"; you come from "outside" their group. I've seen this happen time and time again, unless by luck, you are the manager's close friend, or relative. If not, you're screwed over.
This happened to me when my group came over from Cingular Wireless. Even though Wireless was keeping the company afloat, our entire group was treated like cr-p and contempt. Even though we were of the same company, we weren't. They hated us and showed us every single day. Our 2nd line was come miserable bi--h named Margaret Lakins who drew pleasure from tormenting former CW employees.
This is what AT&T does. Upskill, stay relevant, then get AWAY from this dumpster fire ASAP.

Upskilling at this shithole of a company won't affect your chances of keeping your job or getting promoted, or even being considered for lateral moves. The company doesn't care. They have their own agenda as to who stays and who gets promoted. If you are over 50, white, and straight you are on limited time at AT&T. It doesn't matter if you earned a PhD in Computer Science from MIT and helped invent ChatGPT, you're screwed if you're not of the minority LGBTQ+ designation.

As stated already, don't wait for the company to improve your skills. You need to look into local community colleges/ technical schools/on-line. Focused on more technical less crafted skills i.e. product management, data analytics, AI.

It's never a companies responsibility to keep an employees skills growing. If you want to increase your skillset, show some initiative and take some continuing education classes.

I still have the same skills I've had for the last 20 years and have not improved on them in the least. My job as an installer just doesn't call for it nor do I care to make myself more marketable! I'm not worried about layoffs due to my seniority and really don't care even if I did get laid off! It's called complacency and that's what happens to you when you work for one company for too long. You get lazy and complacent and that's not a recipe for success in these job market conditions. It worked for me because of timing, but not anymore.

Layoffs are not due to skills. They’re due to a combination of age or lack of sucking up skills.
