Over the years, I’ve worked on so many teams with people who do almost nothing, always claiming to be sick, taking leave, generally dropping the ball, ignoring emails, and are the definition of incompetent.
What happens to them? Absolutely nothing. They are still here years later, no layoffs, manager does nothing because they don’t want the trouble.
If you are dependable and hardworking, you end up being the one to pick up the slack. If you’re always saying yes with a positive attitude, you’ll get more and more work piled on, eventually taking a toll of your mental and physical health. At the end of the day, what do you get? A extra few hundred dollars a year? A pat on the back while your manager takes all the credit for your work?
This is why I no longer go the extra mile or put in extra hours because there’s simply not point.
