Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Current Leadership Mindset

After reading so many posts about toxicity, internal politics, work culture, terminating good employees and demotivation. I am curious as to what is the leadership mindset? Have the good leader beed fired too?

The problem is most “leaders” have no leadership skills. The good “leaders” let you do your job or let you be innovative. But the norm use fear over people. Either because they are afraid of losing their job or they know they are incompetent.

@347 Wow. Never thought of it that way before. In hindsight, I do agree that most people in leadership positions at TGT shouldn't be leading at all. They don't possess the necessary skillsets to lead and/or manage people well. Dare I say - It's even worse when they (managers) can't stop being IC's, and start micromanaging your work.

I had too many micromanagers during my time there across multiple departments who wanted me to do things THEIR WAY, and butting their noses into my work and it came to a point where you wonder "why bother making any attempts at recommending anything or being innovative if it's going to get shot down" and you end up just doing what they want you to do. It was exhausting when your managers have no trust in you doing the work or are risk-averse or just control freaks. Good riddance.

The problem is that Target does not know how to (or maybe care about) hiring people who are leaders. Most leaders I see at the L7/L8 level have an IC mentality and approach.

@19f Agree with the backstabbing. I would also throw in there to keep your personal life personal. Oversharing thinking that you've "bonded" with your coworkers in the office can sometimes have undesirable and unexpected consequences. The people you work with are NOT your friends - that may hurt to hear but it's true.

Beyond the excessive workload or unrealistic expectations what's even worse is the backstabbing culture these days. Leaders will throw sub-ordinates and colleagues under the bus, this blame game has made Target really toxic.

leaders seem to be lacking leadership skills. They be talking but have no direction in where we are going or how to get us out of this state. Not to mention, everyone here is mainly white. Leadership could use more DEI.

It's not that good leaders have been fired, they have decided to seek new opportunities outside of Target. Leaders with good reputations can land a new role outside of Target. As a leader of people at Target, you are under immense pressure from your leaders, some with zero empathy, to turn business around with less resources than ever. You then have to motivate a team that may be disgruntled and/or burnt out. It's not fun.

I think the problem is that all the leaders are getting so much pressure from their leaders that they are so itnaudated in the mess that they don’t have time to be good leaders anymore. They are feeling the pressure too and they are likely concerned about their own job security. Gone are the days when people used to say we just sell toilet paper.
