Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

HPE’s version of ‘care and compassion’

HPE: “We will treat all those transitions with the highest level of care and compassion.”
Translation:
We lead with empathy and compassion…
just kidding.
We ghost you, then act like you’re the one who did something wrong.
Nothing says “highest level of care” like a sudden calendar invite titled “Quick Sync” followed by radio silence and a severance PDF.
Anyone else getting the classic HPE special?

Narcissists have a radar for the exceptionally happy, genuine, gifted, and honest ones. We’ve all seen it… it’s usually the quality ones who get laid off or pushed out

Treat people right. Especially when no one is watching. They called it transitions and cost synergies. It was personal. They went after the ones they didn’t like, and my own team acted like I was already gone. No one checked in. No one said a word. During the layoff or after. Just silence. One of the worst experiences working here.

@3yr Agreed, there is no longer such a thing as a career. We should all plan on being laid off in our 50's and being unhireable.

And it's not just here. Oracle reopened the layoff floodgates this week. Expect other firms to follow suit, it just doesn't seem to end.

Companies cut budgets, not talent.
Here they do the opposite.
That’s why people go quiet. Their livelihoods are on the line, and they already know how broken this place is.
The ones who actually deliver get pushed out of the rooms.
The ones who get promoted? Questionable at best.
And the people calling the shots keep making decisions that make zero business sense.
How exactly do you expect to win the future like this?

Surprised by how well HPE’s stock has been doing.

Under Antonio, the company doesn’t feel meaningfully better than it has for years. HPE has a long pattern of struggle, and patterns like that tend to return.

What’s more revealing is how people actually get pushed out.

A lot of the time it has less to do with performance and more to do with being right when someone else in the room was wrong. That person needed to protect their ego, their narrative, or someone weaker. Give the accurate feedback in the moment, and the person who was wrong often looks for a way to settle the score later.

That’s why so many layoffs make no sense on paper. Strong leaders and excellent individual contributors disappear while the toxic ones stay, the mean girl politics, the insecure “Chads,” the frat boy Napoleons, Karens, who make the workplace harder for everyone else. HPE has a habit of protecting them.

The people who keep the culture challenging are rarely the ones who leave.

@3qa It’s disappointing, for sure. But not personal... we just live in such large social environments with so much change that people can't form real or sentimental bonds anymore. Even neighbors are short term. Should be good for the family, as the only long-term relationship left, but fewer people are getting married and then fewer still are having kids. A society of tumbleweeds. We're all migrant workers now.

for those impacted, leadershjp never wanted us to have a seat at the table, equality & human dignity do not exist here. we’re not allowed to be with them or have a seat in this system. Godspeed to all of us, especially in this job market.

When Chemical Engineering requires too much brain power, work in HR. She's acting like she invented Wellness Fridays when it's been around for a decade or so. She wanted to get out of her comfort zone so she went into HR? What does HR do anymore anyway? What a joke!!

Impacted from HQ. After I got laid off, my director, manager, and colleagues didn’t even bother to check on me or see how I was doing. Not a single message. Despite this “culture” Antonio keeps trying to create, it’s so clear middle management only cares about themselves and the optics. It’s all performative. It’s not actually about people at all, and they are definitely not living that “force for good” value.

While HPE cuts thousands of jobs to manage costs, a senior leader treats family college tuition like a bulk purchase and emails the university president for a “volume discount.”

The future of work is feminist. At HPE that means a woman CEO and women leading engineering, sales, and marketing.

Nah. You just sound like a soft southern frat boy still stuck in that college Greek life cosplay.
Did your parents work at HPE, or did the pretty boy privilege simply bounce right off you?

This business is cold.
I feel for those who got laid off, treated like garbage, and ghosted, while their families are just tryin’ to keep a livelihood.

How I felt during my layoff: “Somebody get these beggars out of here!”

by

In The Odyssey, the suitors sneer at the beggar in the doorway. That’s what a layoff feels like from the inside. It’s fine. You learn who people are when you stop being useful to them.

@1pq It’s sad. Remember when people would put a family photo and plant on their desk? OK, work to the letter. Show me the money. Nothing more, nothing less. That's the deal. In 5 years the next big management revolution will be capturing hearts and minds and we have dogs back in the office.

My experience with the layoff. I had worked with these people for ten years. What followed was complete silence. Not one message. Not a single “It was great working with you for ten years.” Not a “Hope you’re okay.” Not even a brief “We wish you well.” Nothing.

“Or desaparecidos” Spanish for “the disappeared,” a term used for people who vanish under authoritarian or repressive regimes (historically associated with Latin American dictatorships), implying the process feels secretive, chilling, and deliberate.

@1ja It takes no time to pop in here and share info (or talk sm--k in the absence of any real info to share).

Don't worry about people's time.

Two years ago, HPE declared 5% layoff over a three year period. Since then, people here and there suddenly go missing without a word said, inside or out. HPE has cracked the layoff code. Like a rapture. Or desaparecidos.
