Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Run far away

If you're considering a job at Schwab, run far away. The hustle culture is back, my toxic manager is even more toxic. He's retaliating against me for moving teams, spreading rumors about my work ethic. He's been reported to HR repeatedly and he's still at Schwab. Senior leaders don't care because he's one of them. Run far away.

@hy agreed been here 12 years and it’s a terrible place to work with back stabbing politics positioning and lip service. Run or just do the minimum.

I’ve worked here 13+years. Schwab is a very hard place to work. The myth of how nice we are, Schwamily, is bonkers. It’s a paycheck for me. But it’s also a place that will gas light you and make you question your professional choices. Drink the Kool Aide and watch your back.

Schwab is notorious for posting "ghost jobs", trying to give the impression that they are growning.

In reality, most of the job postings are never filled. Do not waste your time applying.

Unless you are located in India, that's where the jobs end up.

@cs I understand that coming straight out of the university, you may have limited understanding how things work in a political organization. You will soon find out, kiddo!

I do actually feel bad for you son. You've been failed by our soft culture which priortizes your feelings over the honesty you need to hear. The cold hard reality is this: if you don't want to be retaliated against for disloyalty, then be loyal. If you don't want people warning others about your poor work ethic, then develop a good work ethic. It's just that simple.

This is probably a good time to remind everyone

  • HR represents the company
  • HR does not manage managers
  • HR will only act to cover up and protect the company and will only do so when there is legal exposure
  • There is no law against bad management

OP’s examples are likely not actionable. But, if you are in a similar situation

  • Look to leave
  • Have savings, networking and personal effects ready for to go
  • Document everything off site including emails, recordings, notes and notices
  • You may have a case if you are in a protected class

Yes, Schwab is toxic. Yes, HR will investigate and then gaslight and dismiss. Yes, we have an ombudsman program that is supposed to help employees.

All nonsense.

Yes, we investigated ourselves and found yourselves did nothing wrong. But thanks for all the claims so we can build a defense and make things worse for you.

Getting rid of a manager is hard here. Executives need to admit directly that they failed. It’s disruptive to the team. Seriously, the argument when we discuss bad manager issues always comes down to that they are bad but known and on the org chart.

Think about that.

OP. Document, leave and if necessary engage a labor lawyer. Do not go to HR or the ombudsman ever.

This forum is for layoffs, not for whining about your manager.
