Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Taking PTO a factor in the PE layoff?

A significant chunk of the team is gone and seems like a common pattern is that they took a healthy amount of PTO in general. A colleague also barely took PTO but was recently forced by their manager to take leaves and maintain good balance and they did, and were laid off now. Almost all of them took a long time off summer.

Any similar pattern in your teams? Feeling worried and more hesitant to take PTO now after this. Was planning a visit to see family but thinking of cancelling it now.

@q1 good for them, exposing the hypocrisy of "unlimited time off"

@qm This is what I do. taking the same amount of pto as i was granted previously. but i still feel guilty everytime I put in a request to my manager. as if im not allowed to take that much.

@q1 10 weeks pto in 7 months is so high that it sounds like they have already quit and are just collecting a paycheck for as long as they can.

Most of my team plays it safe and just takes the same amount of pto that they had before it switched to unlimited. (Our manager never told us to do this, we just all independently came to that conclusion and have discussed it amongst ourselves.)

@q1 shouldn't the VP PIP the manager who approved the PTOs? Wait, isn't PTO "unlimited"? Sounds like wrongful termination

We have two people in my department that have taken over 10 weeks of PTO since January. Our VP is monitoring them so our Manager can PIP them.

@ag the moral of the story is - take as much leave as you can, because with their recent penny pinching changes, you don't even accumulate paid time off that you're entitled to be paid off. Unlimited time off my A$$

@aw they mean layoff with severance. Nothing to do with performance

When you all say “let go” do you mean lay off with severance or dismissed for performance without severance?

Guy on my team was given a 2 last year because of AI usage, even though he hit the numbers they wanted. He ended up doing 100% AI, hitting every metric for this year AFAIK, took not even a single day off, and was still let go.

Related to AI use / performance reviews as far as I know. They chose anyone that ever got below a 3 in entire career at company. I know someone that was not let go, and they are the typical brown-noser that doesn't really do any work, but talks a lot. Typically takes 6+ weeks a year off.

No idea about anyone else but if that was it I have no idea how I survived. I took like 6 weeks of PTO last year (which is similar to my normal pattern) and have been on parental leave most of this year and wasn't layed off. I did get an exceeds expectations review and a promotion this year though.
