I've heard from people working in finance that Charlie has started looking at 2025 and 2026 financial numbers. Many of them have gotten direction to reduce costs where possible.
LFF people are moving to EXM/EXP to reduce rent costs.
Most of the other costs are the people.
Anybody heard anything from any senior execs about future turbulence? Do any of the teams even have people to shed? Aren't we lean enough as we are?

@18r see some people online that were earlier laid off last friday, I think it indeed is happening
@18j from the discussion here, it seems maybe some were hired back as contractors.
@16z did you mean they were hired back?
@17f its been going on continuously since 2022, what makes you think it will stop. Mark this post, managed enterprise will crash harder & faster than consumer did.
Is there any news again on layoffs? Is the chopping block still ongoing?
@v1 Yep! They brought back the Aero team and Kamal.
@14v that makes a lot of sense considering his business is directly tied to stock valuation of SpaceX . He does not give a damn about hughes consumer customers
@14v sales compensation people from HR were laid off, this means they don't give a sh-t about enterprise/managed services they keep talking about.
As one that was let go after many, many years, I know that I was not alone in that regard. I don't believe there was much favoritism with who was kept on. Instead, it appears to be more of an age thing. The number senior level, subject matter experts and system architects that were cut makes no sense if there is any intention of continuing the business. Charlie is obviously all-in with SpaceX and Starlink, so why would he run a competing business? This cut was purely about numbers...cut the senior, and therefore more expensive employees and hang on for a few more months bleeding less payroll until he shuts the doors.
I would love to see a percentage of folks over 50 that were part of the layoff. From what I can tell, it is significant, especially if previous layoff rounds are included. Maybe there's a shrewd lawyer out there who is willing to take on Charlie and his team of lawyers in a class action ageism case. Any takers?
@p4
Last week 450 people were let go. The terminations were truly a backstab to all in the company employees.
@tq I am sure Granite is drooling, they have taken a lot of HNS's big names over the past few years.. I am surprised Murphy, and Onemain did not jump ship years ago, as I know both were not happy.. HNS bringing on new Managed network customers has been few and far in-between over the last 5 years, and the ones that they do are small.. and just keep selling new warez to one who is left...
@OP I don’t believe there’s an element of favoritism as a criteria for the layoff because a few executives and senior directors that many would consider favorites of the powers that be were let go.
I can also attest that whoever remained were the least competent ones, my apologies to them.
The remains will not go anywhere. This thing was meant to sink August, then it won’t be a sale before closure. They’ll first close the company, and then sell for spare parts. Charlie is that corrupt and heartless. If he doesn’t have to spend a penny for Hughes, he won’t.
@js I Hate to say it, the layoffs were planned, just like getting rid of everyone in California before they file Chapter 11 (so employees had no guaranteed claim). HNS has a $1,5Bil bond due Aug 1st, with only $100M cash, Charlie is draining $190Bil a year in Jupiter Lease, securing his stake, adding EchostarXXIV LLC as a Secure Creditor, sc--wing HNS unsecured bond holders, This is all getting ready for the Prepackaged Chapter 11 just Like DISH.. Winners Charlie/Echo/SpaceX/ Loosers, everyone who gave their heart and soul to HNS..
@tk Kamran got let go.
@ts I heard that they will hire back few folks on contract to sustain through, the way it happened with Twitter and Doge..
@tr if it's for the sake of their business running smoothly without network interruption and security aspects, they should nuke it and go with some other vendor. They laid off key operations folks. It will all implode
@tq They may be contractually bound, but upcoming renewals will be a problem. Aero is another sh-t show with incompetent fav people hoarding at one place who got pushed out from their own teams...
why would any customer let alone an enterprise one not see this and stay with them. I would advise them to jump ship asap
@ta work location is shabby for contractors.. that's also one of the isdue where you loose good resources
@tk yes . HSC will ramp down and new smart vendors would come in
It will be interesting to see what new org structure they put together on monday to operate with the existing staff. I also agree the selection of people who were left to run it - they are not the most competent of the lot (for eg in SDG) and favoritism and not merit has a role to play here.. what about the offshore teams at HSC and their contractors onsite? Did they close the germantown factory and Kamran also gone?
Well I’ve been a dealer with Hughes over 25 years now ! Hughes pretty much been falling apart for the last couple of years . The last 3 months has been the worse for Hughes dealers in the last 25 years ! I don’t see them recovering as they simply do not have boots on the ground the way they used to as they turned their backs on the ones that help build them !
The fired executive team got what they deserved. The company has been poorly managed for the last decade. A lot a good people worked for these clueless executives. Sad.
@p0 the revenue per employee was above industry standard average so you're wrong
@p0 what incentive does skeleton crew have to continue working, once they leave you will have ghost systems running on their own with no one having any background knowledge. everything will implode , customers will leave and Charlie would make lesser money than he would have.
@p0 the 1000 people you still see are part time contractors or offshore people who dont cost as much
Were you impacted? If not pls sit down and shut the he-l up cause this was all about money. Charlie cheap a-s Ergen not wanting to help Hughes. He’d rather let hundreds of people go over these last two years than see his baby Dish be touched. This layoff was complete bullsh-t. That’s why his spectrum deal failed and the FCC cracked down on his a-s.
@p0 Your facts are wrong! I busted my a-s for this company and so did many of the other ppl that were let go! You are also wrong in that this company is not going to produce anything now that the factory in Germantown is shut down. Charlie and his ego did not care who they fired just as long as it will allow him to file another bankruptcy before 8/1.
@pe, the infighting is exactly what they want. Recognize who's really at fault here.
Well, good luck to Hughes to run with the existing staff that was obviously products of favoritism and pity politics. Pathetic! For all those impacted, even after working tirelessly and sincerely just to see the residual favorites still going, just know that you did your job right, and hats off to your work. Best wishes to all those impacted in finding new and better opportunities.
@OP god bless to all those affected. It’s a difficult weekend for many of us.
@p0, that's just not true. I know a lot of people who gave a ton of time and effort to keep things running smoothly, and they were let go. The only factor in these decisions was the financial bottom line.
Although it's sad that they let go so many people, but the company had so much flab as compared to business or growth they had. Most of the teams had more than 50% director and above unproductive class. I empathize with those impacted and am one of it, but this is good for the company and they can run the business as usual with the skeleton staff left which is still more than 1000+ people... most of the other successful companies run lean, many of the existing folks were just red tape and paper pushers with huge ego.
@n9 they probably don't care about managed services because they barely make any profits, Charlie will make lesser money/profits than what he could have because of cascading failures
Yesterday was tough day for my husband 400 laid off 40 % IT jobs
@nb The # was actually 540
@mc is 500 number confirmed ? seems crazy to believe
@js break/fix calls are still coming in, but that will be a big question! Unless they are going to shut every enterprise customer down and offer no warranty or support (but then they let go of some KEY support personal). They will need us and have to pay us if they want any kind of field services left. HNS uses/used contractors for a good chuck of their business. Without us, there is not much left except the physical assets Charlie left after he stripped them of what valuable spectrum they had!
So many great people - so many years of experience and dedication. I am struggling to see what EchoStar plans. Hope they sell Hughes soon to better ownership. 500 friends lost today.
On Friday, July 25, Hughes let go of almost 500 employees in Maryland (Germantown, Lakeforest), Utah, and some in remote locations. There seems to be no clear logic or succession plan behind this decision. It’s hard to understand why they didn’t just close the company altogether.
So many talented individuals with years of experience and dedication are now gone. I’m struggling to see what EchoStar’s plans are moving forward. I hope they sell Hughes soon to a better owner.
What about vendors/ IT contractors
