Scared to Take FMLA

I want to take FMLA to care for my mother with stage IV cancer. I have heard horror stories about positions being eliminated while on leave. Anyone have experience with this?

@mk find someone else to do it. No one cares about people here

You start to win the game when you play chicken. Fired for taking time off? Go ahead. Not even talking about the legal stuff. But if you are an over taxed employee then you have a little leverage, more than you think. What would they do if everything dropped?

I went on FLMA once to take care of my grandmother when my grandfather died. Worked out fine. Take care of your home. God will reward you.

The Ford experience can resemble the tone of the movie Get Out, where normal surface behavior can hide a more controlling underlying dynamic, and where questioning it can lead to pressure to conform. Over time, some people may feel the environment becomes more coercive after they have adjusted to it and normalized certain practices, especially when they begin raising reasonable concerns or questioning internal processes or policies, such as yours. I typically describe this to others who haven’t experienced it firsthand as a psychological effect similar to Stockholm syndrome. Even after leaving or being fired, due to retaliation, it can still feel like the impact continues through reputation effects or ongoing professional consequences, which can make it feel like the situation is never fully over. In a typical environment, such questions would be seen as straightforward, and it would be considered common sense to take options like FMLA when needed, for example in a family medical situation. It would be common sense that you take the FMLA. Wishing the best for your mother and hopefully you refuse to drink the Kool-Aid, even if you're the last one in this cult that you have no idea you joined...

If you really need advice see an attorney. You’re just getting opinions here

They have ways around the FMLA so when making your decision, it can very likely mean losing your job. At the end of the day, Ford will drop you like a bad habit if it suites them so you're never safe. You are left deciding what's more important, what can you stand to give up.

They might not think you're worth the money anymore. But do you think they're worth the life you're giving them anymore?

Take the leave. They will be hard pressed to avoid handing you a distinct advantage in whatever conversations you have with HR afterwards if that happens.

Take the leave. If Ford lets you go they will be doing you a favor.

You can find a new job, you won’t find a new mom.

Take the leave. Your mom needs you more than Ford.

Federal law says yes they can eliminate that position but you must be offered a similar position you cannot be fired while on FMLA ...not what really happens could be different but I agree with the other comment...take care of your mother
