Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Layoffs

How often does headquarters in BP do layoffs? Looking to join company but would like to gauge job security there. And out of curiosity, do you really need to be "highly extroverted" per the culture. Thx in advance.

BP is the home of a lot of operational teams. The call center people are there, the HR ops team, procurement, I think some tech teams, stuff like that.

There are layoffs all the time at TGT. The really big ones make the papers but there are small ones pretty much all the time. I hate to say it but there's not really "job security" anywhere anymore.

Outgoing people do have a little better luck in retail since it's a people business. But introverted strong performers do just fine.

I wish you good luck!

There have been periodic layoffs over the past few years as teams restructured to be more "efficient". This means that poor results meant that Target had to find a way to drive profit and eliminating headcount was one way to reduce overhead. Leadership would determine that the India team or vendors took on the defunct internal team's responsibilities. What has failed to register with Target leadership is that lack of job security leads to "safe" decision making that does not lead to innovation and growth. People are less willing to take chances, etc... than previously. When Target was at its strongest, people had a lot of autonomy and the ideas were flowing!

As far as being extroverted, at one point in time Target made a concerted effort to be more inclusive towards introverts and even brought in Susan Cain, the author of the book "Quiet" to talk to the team. I have found that people don't need to be extroverted but do have to be able to communicate their thoughts, strategies, ideas, provide feedback, identify and take partners, etc...

While I am not at Target anymore, I did find it a great company to work for and I wish you the best of luck!

@ef Ge-z, I meant to say that before these last mass layoffs in Oct 2025, there was the one 10 years ago (2015-ish?). Thanks for the correction. I was trying to convey to the OP that mass layoffs aren't common at TGT but small, incremental ones seem to happen all the time, and have happened in the last 10 years that don't make the news. There is always some sort of restructuring that happens, and after this last major one I realized that it doesn't make sense to be loyal to a company anymore. There were incremental layoffs in 2024 that didn't make any waves outside of TGT - that was my wakeup call that you should always have one foot in the door; one foot out.

Are you speaking of Target Brooklyn Park? No idea. When layoffs are done, they are done across campuses; but maybe someone who has worked at BP for a long time has some insight into layoffs that have occurred there? Last mass ones happened over 10 years ago but TGT (just like most companies) is known for doing small incremental ones that don't make the news.

BTW, I consider downtown Minneapolis to be the HQ of Target; not Brooklyn Park.

As for highly extroverted, I am not sure how much there is to that as I've seen both introverted (I am a hybrid intro/extrovert) and extrovert do well at TGT, but I do believe though that the more extroverted you are (especially in Merchandising) the more successful you will be. Just my take.
