Mindless Executives Ruining The Farm

I started in 2010 under the Rust years. The golden years of State Farm. Ed treated every employee like family. I worked in the old Mid America Zone and boy were we treated right. I had coworkers in the Murfreesboro and Newark offices who loved coming in. I knew people in Kalamazoo and Winter Haven who were working when Ed Sr still ran the place.

Fast forward to Tipsord. We knew he was going to change things, but he didn’t hide it. He knew what he wanted and despite the old culture pushing back and keeping him in check - after COVID he at least had some respect for us (although more likely he knew he was retiring soon and didn’t care anymore).

Now we have Farney. He’s been with the company for decades. Several soon to be retirees thought (as I did) that he’d bring back the golden era (or at least something akin to it). Boy were we all wrong. Everything that comes out of this man’s mouth is ‘we do it because our competitors do’. What happened to the State Farm that led this industry? What happened to the State Farm that treated customers like neighbors because executives treated employees like family?

It’s a sad day when people in the HUBs have to go in office more when 40% of the workforce gets to work from home full time. This company isn’t State Farm anymore and honestly I hope this year shows the board that the current C suite is not equipped to be leaders.

@18s I do not agree, ET was gutted in 2023. 700+ employees “rebadged” to HCL to only be released from there. SF does not care about how those employees are being treated by HCL. HCL does NOT care about the rebadged employees. SF does NOT care about what those employees are going through. It’s not just claims and underwriting employees getting the shaft. ET is too.

Leadership seems to have this seething hatred for people in claims, underwriting, and servicing/support roles, and i cant figure out why they would hate the people who interact the most with the customer. Who does it benefit to keep people in these roles as unhappy as possible with massive turnover, especially since effort into training seems to be next to nothing with zero care for learning and more interest in saving face on metrics and getting people on the floor even if they are clueless.

This company has stopped making sense a while ago. We need a 100% full purge of all management and the board if this company is to turn around and start being the industry leader again. Shame we have such weak and ineffective leaders.

There are two state farms for employees. Those treated at least decently, and those doing the actual work of insurance.

And having been on both sides, those in the first group are kept in the dark about the latter's reality.

I get it, but ET isnt normal state farm, its a department that is always hiring, pays well, and tries to keep people, they need you so they dont need me and my knowledge of insurance....if that makes sense. So never compare ET to the insurance side of things, they HATE us, and need to treat you guys like normal humans, so they can rid themselves of the rest of their workforce via tech. theyll dump you the second they dont need you, look at our IT department being sold off.

So yeah management, maybe some analyst roles and ET have no idea what the rest of us in insurance related departments and call centers have to go through, its a totally different world.

I doubt any of you in ET would recognize the company if you spent a week in claims or underwriting. Not knocking you all but you guys are treated like humans.

Up to 70% eventually. Teams being shuffled so we have teams in same locales. The

Boss says we should think we are at a wedding. You wouldn’t dial in for that.

We will be about half of size when we go back in.

@zt I'm not the person who you were responding to, but I must back up his account of people working 1 hour a day in ET. I realize many departments are likely tracked as you mention, but there are many areas without tracking.

For over 20 years I worked in ET, and not counting the times when we may have worked 24 hours straight while fixing an outage, I would say my AVERAGE day at BEST would have been a 4 hour day of actual work. The joke on our team was that there were some people who were on the team for years but couldn't fix a simple issue while on call without pulling in a knowledgeable team member. I became so disenchanted with this that I began "protesting" by reducing my workload to 1 or 2 hours a day. Nobody complained, probably because it wasn't really unusual.

Unrealistic or you were an analyst/Manager to even suggest people do an hr of work a day. Anyone on the phone or dealing with customers have so much tracking software they know how often you touch your mouse, how much work is completed, and any downtime needs to be explained, even a 1min error is noticed. I have to work, out side of breaks and lunch, non stop the whole day, and need to have an explanation if thats not the case.

You would last one week doing 1hr of work, maybe less, they would fire you for that.

So yeah i get your point, people werent all that efficient in office, and are not at home, but in customer facing roles were talking a difference of maybe 30seconds to 1min of downtime between calls difference, thats it, im not kidding ive seen the printouts.

Must be nice to be in a role where people could even joke they do 1hr of real work a day. Enjoy it while it lasts, it wont.

Yeah its sort of a cruel place to have a career right now. True across the industry. I just dont get this management style of keeping turnover high, understaffing, cut costs everywhere sc--w long term ramifications, and of course, 0% care about losing the company's status in the market and declining market share.

Executives have given up, without even trying, and seem to be just managing a decline theyd rather not deal with or fight. Ive put in over a decade here and not a damn things changed for the better in all this time, and the gaslighting that they are is getting so old and well, dishonest. Just come out and say we want to be a cut rate cheap insurance company with as few americans working for us as possible.

@vw we know that's why don't don't take any responsibility even after "17+ years of java experience" but need pair-programming to even write a simple function.
Maybe you need to be assigned "siloed" tasks to evaluate your skills a bit instead of being retained and promoted through "rubbing elbows"

@fz I know for sure nothing is going to change at statefarm if people are brought in to the office. Before COVID the "running" joke in ET was that people would so at most 1 hr of some (questionable) work while simply chatting with colleagues or running (see what i did there) in that basement tunnel for daily exercise, etc. while some managers have secret under the table deals on promoting each other's spouses. I have personally worked with someone, now an engineering manager and she could absolutely not lead an IT/cloud effort without that occassional mid-level engineer providing guidance and laying out a plan.
This is why I know statefarm will not succeed in the Digital space when managers itself struggle in providing guidance, which is a requirement for the role.

I understand remote folks it su-ks for you too! You are not missing anything, the 2040 workforce is a pure disaster. The people wear their pajamas to work, hello kitty back packs, smell, dirty, face tattoos, ear gauges, lip piercings, the elevators and parking garages smell like weed and sitting in traffic for hours paying tolls is pure torture. Not to mention the cost of living and just demographics from he-l....count your blessings....for now!

Get to work from home??? Try being fully remote when all the job postings require, at minimum, hybrid weeks of being in the office. We're just left to rot until we are no longer useful and they give us a QED, and probably no severance by then.

State Farm is trash, JF is just continuing the same destruction of SF with just different branding and delusional optics. He is also covering MT's criminal tracks. These people should be working at Costco selling hotdogs or sweeping the floors. They are dweebs and wannabes pretending to be big shots. They are re-ards from the corn fields of Bloomington and have no clue what they are doing. Useless!

You could have brought up the crushing workload, the cut in benefits, the lackluster raises, the lack of trust in employees, or many other ways things have worsened. Instead you focused on remote work. I heard they are cutting back on remote work. Congratulations. You are as intelligent as, and see the same problems as, the leaders you attack.
