Merit is a myth here

Can anyone remember the last time a promotion went to the most qualified person, and not just someone's friend or relative? I feel like genuine merit-based advancement doesn't exist at this company anymore. How are we even supposed to stay motivated in such an environment?

from decades experience at TI - you gotta be "in the club" to get promoted in the mgmt ranks. I find it funny the talk of Tech ladder here - I'm not sure I knew ANYONE on the tech ladder path that did not nominate themselves and also had "in the club" managers supporting their tech ladder efforts. Gotta be "in the club"...

A "promotion" to a management roles is not based on technical skills. Those are a different set of needs that we as technical folks may not always comprehend, and think that incompetent folks are promoted.
On the technical side, if someone is really good, then the peers can elect that person onl tech-ladder. Looking at the new people that are getting elected every year, i think your question has a clear answer. All these are elected by peers to a higer rung (promotion)., and not by a manager that we may not always respect

I take it that you didn't graduate from Texas A&M. That school seems to be a promotion pipeline at TI.
