Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

R2 Layoff Chatter Is Fake News

Real talk: I don’t think Verizon is dropping another layoff bo-b.

They already swung the axe HARD, 13,000+ gone late last year. That was the ugly, one-and-done purge to stop the bleeding and buy themselves breathing room. New CEO basically said “yeah we’re still watching every dollar,” but the massive headcount reset? I am pretty sure that chapter’s closed.

Right now it feels more like cleanup and reinvest mode: patching up the customer service dumpster fire, letting AI chew through the old clunky processes instead of hiring more bodies, trying not to lose any more phone subs to T-Mobile.

If they turn around and do round 2 this soon it’d look panicked, tank morale even harder, and Wall St would eat them alive. I would bet they try to ride this leaner crew for at least the next year unless the wheels completely fall off.

For once I am actually feeling cautiously optimistic. Maybe the worst really is over. 🤞

@OP I was in Finance. Until they asked me to move to BR, then offered me the standard year buyout since I decided not to move to the armpit of the world (that information should tell you my level.)

There is another five-figure layoff coming about a month post consolidation. Then ~5k in Q4 again. That was plan A. Plan B was ~5k now, and five-figure in Q4, depending on how well QAM-less TV goes (how many onshore engineers they need to fix things) and how quickly/easily Frontier comes online.

Don't forget the 6k heads from Starry, as well, that'll be coming in April. Which will not be profitable, and will fold like a cr-ppy pair of BlueJeans. Or the brilliant Lowell acquisitions of AOL and Yahoo.

Target HC (the key metric for layoffs) is ~78,500 heads.

I just accepted an offer with a growing company (more money, but have to be in office; can't be perfect, I guess.) Cashed out my (frozen, small) pension and stock together awards to an IRA, with stocks that actually perform.

I enjoyed the semi-continuous axe swinging for my 26y, made good money (but not great, after testing the market), left with a fat check to go make more elsewhere.

Telecom has become a race to the bottom. That'll necessitate less HC, lower salaries, and smaller businesses. You're going to see more reductions, with a far smaller RIF package in the future. I worked through the BCs. It's coming.

Couldn't be happier to be out...

@bm I’m not guessing. I guess I should have specified Senior Directors in Finance, not just Directors. Mark my words. I’m so glad I’m out.

Verizon is also continuing to work through its extensive job cuts, which will quickly see the carrier slash 13,000 total jobs in short order.

Skiadas noted that Verizon slashed just over 10,000 jobs by the end of 2025, which pushed the carrier’s total employee base down to just under 90,000 total employees. Verizon plans to finish the latest culling by the end of March.

Verizon CEO Dan Schulman remains committed to righting the carrier’s operations, telling investors this week that company investments will be highly scrutinized, a move that comes as the carrier works through the last of its large job cuts.

“We're not going to invest in places where we're losing money right now,” Schulman said during Verizon’s recent first-quarter earnings call. “As I mentioned I think last quarter, we have a number of places where you add it all up, and we're losing $1 billion to $1.5 billion a year in margin. Like we are either going to sunset those, retire those, or divest those things, and there's no need for us to continually invest in places where we're just going to lose money forever on that.”

“Noncore areas that are not aligned to growth, including legacy areas, are being significantly reduced and/or eliminated, and that includes areas such as business wireline, nondirectional products, technology as well, wholesale, legacy copper, and voice platforms, and even projects with too long of a payback,” Skiadas explained.

You are dreaming, wishful thinking that there will be no more layoffs. As Dan outsources work, spins off retail stores, synergies with the Frontier merger, cost reductions, it will happen in 2026

I am delighted by what he has done. The stock has not been this high in ages. Hopefully they continue to get rid of the corporate stores. The stores have been a problem since the beginning. Predatory retail and shady business practices don't belong in a technology business. This is something you might expect when purchasing a used car not a technology service. The stores are rife with low-lives and sleazy bait and switch artists leading to a terrible customer experience, certainly not a delightful one. We are at a point that online sales and strategic use of 3rd party selling will more than meet our needs. Doing this will enable 🐅 to shed thousands of more dead-weight employees who should never have been allowed to make the claim that they worked in telecom.

@be Directors are too low level this early on to know anything. Nice Try. Keep guessing as this site does and one day you could be correct.

What do you want Dan to do?
As he continues to consolidate business units, programs and tech stacks; As he de-prioritize and trim upcoming projects, budgets and ongoing work. What do you think will happen to headcount associated with that?

I have been told by several directors and my AVP that there will be more layoffs, and very soon. A very significant number. To delude yourself into thinking there won’t be any more, sadly shows your nievete when it comes to Verizon. It’s the unfortunate truth but yes, there were be many more. Hold onto your hat.

You're dreaming. There's always been RIFs that happen multiple times per year. Dan The Hatchet Man is sharpening his axe for 2026 in order to show profitablity, "delight" the customer and to line his and the pockets of the C-Suite Leadership with millions including Hans The Con Man!

It won’t be 13k but there most certainly will be another 5k ish. I foresee them to begin selling more corporate stores to indirect after this quarter and then continuing to close/sell more corporate stores throughout the year. Wouldn’t be surprised if they closed another 150 stores this next year and another 150 the following year.
