Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Replacing retiring workers

Either this company is not at all prepared for the waves of retiring employees, or in fact they have no intention of replacing the majority of employees who retire. Which one of these is more true?

I’m so happy I’m leaving this dumpster fire. So many experienced hard workers are leaving and so much bad work coming in from contractor firms. This place is going to be a shell of its former self. Those who are left after the dust settles…good luck !

You have several people that come on this message board and talk about how little work they do day in and day out. Why would we need replacements?

They are happy to downsize period! They don’t care about the knowledge that is leaving. They’ll either offshore w/training or stuff will fall on the floor and no one will care.

I’m confused. My leadership claims all the knowledge of the potential retirees is needed and will be lost yet, I’ve heard nothing about trying to keep them from leaving.

Sick time? We don’t have sick time without getting an occurrence put on our records.

Business Field Services which is part of the CS&O organization is in a growth mode. Unless T plans on selling off that portion of the business which I doubt very highly it would do based on its success, there's still plenty of work to keep technicians gainfully employed for quite some time!

I retired in 2020 and I’m now working for a contractor that puts in the inner duct for the fiber…..in some areas we put the fiber in also! They will continue to contract more fiber work out…..which is the only work of any significance! In the meantime they are decommissioning VRADS and all kinds of PG equipment. This my friends is the end of a great era!!

It’s laughable that anyone is one this board talking about all the great benefits T offers. Most folks cannot use the benefits because of workload.

A surplus is to downsize the business. If you allow that position to be backfilled, kinda defeats the purpose of a surplus. There will be no growth in the next 3-5 years or until they are able to get expense inline with projected revenues. Basic economics 101….

They clearly stated on a town hall that there will be no back filling.

All of the above. They’re happy people are retiring, they’re not replacing them and they’re laying off more.

Folks you all need a reality check. You all make it sound like the “only” benefit is 401k. Many employers out there, offer nothing. AT&T offers many benefits like, excellent caregiver leave, unlimited sick time, very favorable vacation time, damn good wage for the amount of work.

There are no benefits left for Managers who retire now. Just their 401K.

Both; they want contractors, non US based workers and managers (so they don’t pay retiree benefits).
