2 IMs in a row, manager putting me on PIP now

For my 2025 mid year review, I was given an IM. Second half of the year, my manager acknowledged things were a lot better but still gave me an IM for the EOY review because he "had to consider the year as a whole". Now he tells me because I have 2 IMs in a row I need to be on PIP according to HR. His review had the most bogus generic points just so he could embellish why he was giving me the poor rating.

I should probably be looking for another job now but does anyone have any advice? Is it pretty much over now that I'm on PIP? Should I not sign any of the PIP documents? Ive already opened a ticket with HR to have all of this documented going forward but my managers assessment just seems completely unreasonable.

@OP
Th review process is atrocious in this company. Stacked ranking in full view. Alot of good people I know in different areas got an IM, strong people.
Is it you? Be honest. Did you really deserve it? Some of it?
Your manager probably was told to give you an IM. Ever thought about that?
It happens here.
Unless you want to drag your boss through that process with constant emails, daily progress updates, checkins, and generally make his life miserable, your still on the way out.
I would resign.
Protect your rep.
Get out on your terms.

You will not be employed here by the end of the year. Likely mid year.

My manager gave me 2 IMs this year. She did not mention PIP. Had no idea what it was. Does she need to tell me this? I had meet expectations for the other 2 years I have been here. Then I got a terrine manager who wants me gone for the most part.

At least the PIP process still exists. It’s designed so you have benchmarks for improving, and as long as you demonstrate “progress” you “should be able to come off the PIP. Unfortunately this company looks for ways to avoid keeping people… you’re now looked at as a “save” opportunity (and not the good kind)

If you are on PIP, there’s no coming back from that. It’s just a formality.

BTW. Why not fight it. The best outcome is displacement with severance. What do you have to lose?

This really really su-ks. Just know for various reasons over my career i have had to start over. Two steps forward one step back. I will be ending my career successful in spite of the knocks. What i can suggest is bit the bullet get out as fast as you can, get ahead of the negativity so it doesn’t have time to set in. Grab the people names you need for references (forget WF HR). Go forward and think positively no MATTER WHAT. Minor detour in the road to life. It does SU-K however.

Agree with everyone. It really su-ks but best to get out before the place gets to your health.

I do think in a lot of ways this really su-ks. Just becasue they have to make cuts they start targeting and then creating the history to support their narrative. PATHETIC. I am sorry for you. Most people are in an employee at will state. A shame that they have the need to demean people to

You will not win against your a$$hol3 manager, regardless of how incompetent he is or of how outrageous his assessment of you is. Go on PIP, that'll buy you a couple of months, but do not expect your manager to change his rating, it's like admitting he was wrong, which he'll never do. HR is not your friend. You will not be able to move laterally, i.e., to find another position in the company, because of the PIP. You may document everything like others suggested, but he will document everything, too, and at the end of the day it will be his documentation vs. your documentation, guess who will win. Start looking for another outside position now.

98% sure you are being terminated. Don’t bet on the other 2%. Start posting outside of here and don’t get caught up in the head games this causes.
I wouldn’t bother working the PIP, but that’s just me.

Start applying to new roles asap. Don’t be surprised if you’re jobless in a couple months. Don’t mean to be a doomer but that is the WF reality.
