Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Expected to do more with less

I have seen many times that pretenders who don't actually do anything useful climb the corporate ladder with ease. The management "made a big effort" for everyone to notice this, and now they expect us to do our best and do more with less. More is expected of me than ever since I started working here. However, how many of us will agree to that? It seems to me that now even concerns about layoffs are no longer able to raise productivity.

Years ago ATT had a assessment center. If wanted to be managment they sent you and your managment skills were assessed. There were various tests

I have seen it for many, many years with ATT and the problem with aspiring to the next level through hard work and dedication is this. If you're good at your job and a hard worker, your supervisor wants to keep you around to make him/her look good. If you're a sc--w-up or do the bare minimum just to get by, you either get lateraled to another department if in-fact they'll even take you or you get promoted just so your supervisor can get you out of the department. It's been this way for years and I've witnessed it first hand!

Honestly, I think it is like this almost everywhere. People who know "things" like processes and how to get things done are not promoted. The reason is that they keep the less knowledgeable management above them insulated from day to day escalations. I literally one time was told by a manager of a group I was trying to get into (not at AT&T by the way), that they didn't want me, because I insulated them from problems. Those who don't know how to get things done, but can BS, cajole, and otherwise make people feel good about themselves become management. It has been that way for me since I started in the business world. I honestly wish we would go back to some sort of trade system, even for management, where your aptitude could be evaluated and you could be promoted based on your understanding of the job in general. The Air Force works on that methodology. It would prevent nepotism and level the playing field. The problem I see with this though, is your inclusivity warriors would claim that it discriminates against this or that minority group. Ergo, you are stuck with brainless managers that only know how to reach out to their Director counterparts to fix problems. The Directors they reach out to often have no understanding what these problems are. At the same time, all of these numb skulls travel on business and cajole with the other id--t directors in other companies- wining, dining, shmoozing, and the like is their entire job while traveling on the company dime, and really doing nothing. The whole concept of corporation in general is a digression back to fiefdom. Once the masters no longer need you, you are thrown off the fief.

you are not getting promoted because your pet co-workers are sabotaging you and others progress. step in be a friend and show your manager who you really are. managers are looking for people that will be in the same trenches as them.

It’s very sad the acceptable laziness and feeling sorry for yourself while still employed with benefits. Let me guess you feel you’ve earned it?

I’ll keep doing more with less, and I’ll also keep charging more overtime to do it.

Incoherent and pointless. Try harder.

Agree with Thais post. I’ve been doing more with less for awhile now. Employees who don’t know what that’s like will be introduced to it very soon. Once everyone gets to enjoy the workload, we will see how positive all those wannabes are then.
