Leading From the Floor vs. Leading From the Deck

Read this article about the CEO of Waste Management, who regularly shows up to early-morning safety meetings, rides with frontline crews, and spends time in the field talking directly with employees and customers.

It made me wonder whether we’d ever see anything like that at Fidelity Investments. Would Abby Johnson meet with advisors or phone reps, sit in on client calls, or get out of the C-suite and actually see the business up close, instead of managing the firm through dashboards, executive briefings, and carefully scripted town halls?

Feels like two very different ideas of leadership. Curious how others see it.

Abby was on the front lines and managed a Fidelity fund or two. I am sure she had direct interaction with top investors and on the hot seat quite a lot. She has also come to the "front line" and learned about roles and issues. Also she has led this company into a more strategic direction of financial technology over financial investments only. Without her leadership we would be complaining about Schwab or Merrill Lynch .... imagine your comments then.

When I was on the phones, Abby used to walk the floor and observe as the site lead told her what each area was. She looked super disinterested, confused and even scoffed at me eating my sandwich at my desk on lunch break like I was eating dog food. So no, that stopped with Ned.

The show undercover boss was great as it gave a chance for CEO's to see how the real work is being done and the pain points of the employees. The reason for the undercover part was not to get a glossed over, it's always sunny here canned view.
It would be great if Abby could see more of what the front line is facing

I’m in the field and my manager is right there with me as much as he can. Comes into town , observes meetings and we grab a meal and discuss.

Ned (her father) did this all the time. Despite his handlers wanting him to follow a script he went where he wanted and often (on his visits) that was with staff on the front lines. Real leadership! He got see what was real not through the lens of what he was being told. Great leadership!

VPs reporting to VPs - we saw this before. Time for a delayering. Why does marketing need so many VPs?

In 2017, I think she got out of the C-Suite, when the S-xual Harassment Response Committee got stood up.
