IBM Layoffs 2026

If the economy turns around, do you anticipate any IBM layoffs? Any chatter, news or rumors?

@w5 That is exactly the death spiral they are in. IBM is to Tech what a cable company is to telecom and entertainment: a dinosaur. Check the price of Intel during the late 1990's and compare it to today. Or HP, or Lucent Technologies, etc.

@CD You have hit the nail on the head. IBM”s adoption of a modernization strategy limits the amount of customers IBM can actively market to (only enterprise customers need apply), and when’s the last time you heard of IBM adding anymore enterprise customers?
IBM has abandoned 2/3rds of their install base (power installs) because 90% of power ISV’s adopted Linux on Intel SW and HW offerings. Eg Linux on Power was still born.
Finally a modernization SW strategy within IBM means buying innovation to replace legacy.
What does all of this result in? Limited customers (enterprise only), limited opportunities (upgrades only), limited innovations (purchased SW only)
NET NET = IBM has to shrink legacy costs vis offshoring and layoffs to deliver Wall Street growth

IBM always does layoffs no matter the economy. It's the only way they show investors money, plus paying off all the debt from buying companies

@c0
maybe they meant turn around like a tornado
we will have to click our heels 3 times and say
there is no place like the 1990s, there is no place like the 1990s, there is no place like the 1990s

@OP IBM layoffs have NOTHING to do with the economy. It's all about greed, greed and more greed by the IBM Executives and to he-l with the consequences. Ir's the Gimme, Gimme, Gimme principle brought to by Alvind and the Pi-pmunks. Forget the IBM Business Conduct Guidelines (BCGs).

Arvind's layoffs have nothing to do with the economy. It is due to a lack of leadership, imagination and moral principles - and lots and lots of greed.

In case the economy turns around (hard to believe). The Indian cabal at the top of IBM will speed up the dismantlement. Power will be sold to the Indians. Most of the Indians at the top are preparing to flee the US, the are leaving the sinking ship.

Larry Ellison to buy IBM in 2026 followed by more massive RIFs reductions in force. (I refuse to say RA). Arvind spent $22,000,000,000 of shareholder money buying these things. They WILL NOT integrate into IBM. The employees WILL LEAVE as soon as they smell the IBM home cooking. The customers WILL LEAVE when IBM outsources "support" to countries you cannot find on a map. No existing IBMers know anything about all these companies IBM buys. Would be funny to watch Robbie "I look marvelous in my hoodie and sneakers" Thomas as next IBM CEO taking orders from Larry. Happy Holidays!

Confluent: Announced in December 2025, IBM is set to acquire the data infrastructure company in an $11 billion all-cash deal to boost its AI offerings. The deal is expected to close by mid-2026.
HashiCorp: IBM completed its $6.4 billion purchase of this cloud infrastructure automation company in February 2025.
Apptio: Acquired in 2023 for $4.6 billion to bolster its cloud and automation software.
