Why would anybody want to return? Especially now that RTO is all but guaranteed? How bad must your other place of work be to say, "Hey, I think I'm going back to WFC, that's going to be an improvement!" If I found a way to leave, I know for sure I would never even consider returning.

They never come back to a lesser situation, you probably would do the same.
A lot of guys and gals come back for a gazillion reasons. Sounds like you want to leave and WF lives rent free in your head.
He probably left for more pay. Then, saw an open position at Wells or was told about it by someone at Wells. Applied, was offered even more money, and now he's back.
Because the grass is not greener. WF has warts for sure but there is much much worse out there. Most of the people on this board are WF long timers who have never worked a day in there life and now may have to. OH THE Humanity. Many of you will find out if you get a job when you are let go.
The guy is back?!??! Wow!!! Big news!!!
Money talks and WF is throwing big time money to new hires

This condition applies to situations including child abuse, coach-athlete abuse, relationship abuse and s-x trafficking. Treatment includes psychotherapy (“talk therapy”) and medications if needed.

With lack of advancement for long time employees and HR willing to pay 15% over mid-point for external employees, it's worth it financially to leave and come back. And you already know how bad it is. Get that check!
Not everyone is as miserable as you are
Who cares what other people are doing, and why? The only people im concerned with are myself and the id--ts in the ivory tower.
Funny thing is I did the same. I left for $$ originally. My dept was good to me except compensation. Due to changes at the new employer beyond my control, I found myself back here but with a better compensation package.. ish happens..
