Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I'm perfectly happy at AT&T

I like my job, I am well paid, I get regular bonuses and raises, I like the people I work with, and I don't work more than 40 hours per week (sometimes even less). If you're working here and you're unhappy then you're doing something very, very wrong. Trust me, it's you, not the company that's the problem.

AT&T isn’t competitive in salaey for middle management. The extra perks is what they roll into their EVP. You may start at decent pay, but every time they realign the pay band, you’ll get bumped back to the bottom with entry level newbies making your current salary after a decade. There are better jobs out there. Go find them. I did. Just stop believing that any company you don’t own yourself cares more about you than the bottom line. That’s delusion, and I see a lot of that in corporate America.

I loved working there too before I retired. BTW, I quietly quit 17 years before I retired!! I loved the last 17 years of a 37 year career in management.

You're perfectly happy working at ATT, yet there are thousands of employees that would like nothing better than to be laid off without question! I've been with T for 4 decades and have seen this company really go to the dogs ever since they stupidly bought Directv and Time Warner! Since that time, T has struggled to dig itself out of a very deep ho-e it got itself into! T will be working on debt reduction over the next 2-3 years and it will cost many employees their jobs. Good luck to all affected!

Funny -

I bet 75% of the employees that were laid off between 2015 and today had the exact same attitude as OP before they got the axe.

OP is proof of someone not being aware beyond their own immediate self. Just wait until it happens to him/her

Getting laid off would really make my day, my year, actually, my 2 years! Bring it on cuz I’m ready!

I just retired and loved my job. Do what you love and you’ll excel, get the bonus and make a difference. Leave on top. If you aren’t able to petform in this manner get out.

One thing is for sure, the OP is definitely not a Prem Tech.

I think, like many companies, it all depends on what job you are doing there. I am familiar with people at AT&T that are absolutely buried under tedious piles of work. I am also familiar with those whose jobs are not as tedious in "amount" of work, but are very important to the overall health of the business. If you are unhappy with your job, you can always look to a different position. If you are unhappy overall with the company, there are still plenty of positions at other companies.

Not perfectly happy, but do enjoy working with the technology, the autonomy on how I can get my work done (including what I put in my tookit), the relevance of what I do for the organization, and my immediate peers and coworkers, and boss. The last makes the biggest difference; a boss who's an a-s can ruin any job.

The bureaucracy can be stifling (and I am part of it, so many unnecessary silos have been built up), the company can give me whiplash as both employee and an investor (we were a telecomm, then a media company, and now a telecomm again. Whatever.) Executives get obscene pay cuz, y'know, we "have to retain that talent" and the massive gains in stock price over the past decade certainly justifies that.

For me personally, I have an enjoyable job where I control my schedule, have the resources I need, make decent pay and get decent benefits. No axe to grind, but not sure I would recommend it to people just starting out.

Not every team is the same. You might be on a great team that has awesome perks. Others, not so much. My team is no travel, no parties, goes from 100+hr weeks to at least 40hrs when it’s slow, always on call, canceled time off, canceled vacations and family time or you have to work on vacation, nights and weekends when needed, can be weeks without a day off. Oh yeah, we are all salary so no OT or comp time. But people do get bonuses and promotions occasionally, we do have a good boss that tries to do what they can and good teammates. Last team was pure dread every day, bad bosses, didn’t matter what you did, you could slay it and save the company $millions, no bonuses, no promotions, no recognition. Only teams I’ve seen that are happy are sales and marketing. Everyone else, life sucks. Looking forward to leaving in 23.

AT&T previously paid workers and the side benefit went to share holders. New high school grads start at $30,000; college grads at $50,000. We forget how much a 1-2% increase will cost us after 20 years.
HR says hire with competitive offers, but offer survival increase to those with seniority or vacation benefits. Even unhappy employees will not risk a job change (new guy out fear).

HR is full of nothing but terrible people.

HR is a huge organization and it is not devoid of employee concerns like any other. And that includes surpluses, stresses etc.
Agree that any position is what you make it.

There are pockets in the company are great places to work. My co-worker recently described his sisters job in the company, showed me pictures of their work are and she made good money. Then two months later she was surplus'd. Nowhere in the company is there easy 40 hour work weeks, with no stress and pressure to do more with less. If you are there, then I would be looking to take on additional tasks because they are either going to find a cheaper way to perform your work duties-outsource or let some of your team go to provide the rest with an opportunity to do more work. A few years of 50-60 work weeks to stay caught up and I would like to hear your feedback related to your work situation.

I was happy at at&t. The work was easy and well paid. It's good until you suddenly find yourself surplussed. If you have your source of income suddenly pulled out from under you it's a problem. A problem that is to common here.
