I plan to retire in a few months. I'm struggling with HR's guidance of "let your manager know 3 months prior".
If I follow the retirement guidance from HR, my manager has 3 months to make my life unpleasant and possibly manufacture a way to fire me "for cause". I also would lose three months of potentially getting a layoff and severance (I'm over 40 miles from my assigned office, having originally been hired as a telecommuter).
But if I only give 2 weeks notice prior to my retirement, that's still the honorable thing to do (I guess). That also gets me most of that 3 months of possibly getting a layoff/severance. The final 2 weeks might still suck, but it'll only be 2 weeks.
And if I give zero notice before I retire, that's the feel good choice for me (a small way to voice my displeasure over some things that I won't go into here). Plus, I'd have the maximum opportunity for a Layoff/severance.
Once I start putting in for retirement, will my manager automatically find out...? Does HR send (or CC) an employees manager on retirement related stuff...?
What say the anonymous strangers here on TheLayoff...? I trust you who are not involved more than I trust my manager and HR.
