The performance review system is constantly changing, a moving target of vague corporate objectives and metrics that frustrates everyone.
Your manager, especially if lower level, spends most of their energy managing day-to-day workflow and maintaining a frictionless relationship with upper mgmt. Performance reviews are something to check the box to get on with it.
My best reviews happened when I:
-
>Had a friendly disposition
-
>Contributed in meetings (not dominating, be a smidge above introverted)
-
>Said NO. This speaks more positively about you than saying YES all the time
-
>Created time scarcity in calendar
-
>Did not accept all meeting requests
-
>Did not immediately respond to all emails and chats
-
>Realized the easiest accomplishments can matter more than volume or complexity
-
>Owned one thing (it doesn't have to be a big thing, just own something)
You see lifers toil away in obscurity. Yes it's honorable to keep your head down and work hard. No shame in having some pride there. Yet working at WF, they have no obligation to you to advance your career quickly. If you are ambitious, get in front of things by looking out for you first. Also try not to work at WF too long (2 years tops is enough).
