Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is this a good offer?

I am trying to evaluate an offer from AT&T, and I'm hoping you guys can help me understand what the internal range is. The offer is for a software engineering role in Middletown NJ, for $255k base salary. Where does this fall in the band for Principal Member of Technical Staff? Do most principal engineers at AT&T make more or less than this? I know people on this board are obviously unhappy with the company, but I think I am willing to put up with the annoyances that I've read about on here.

In this role, know the salary bands. Regardless of geo zones, you were not offered this. Sorry. You’re shooting 80k higher than they would realistically pay you.

Stop trolling.

@j7 Can you expand on what some of those other factors are? Is more tenure better or worse in this case?

Someone forgot to mention that when management layoffs are considered, you are ranked in your "universe" by a number of factors. Two that are always included are salary and tenure. Draw your own conclusions. I used to prepare various reports for my VP from the excel file provided by HR.

"Performing Good"? Really? Performing good? Haha. Will I keep make top money if i performing good? Check that box, T.

@OP sure. But understand you'll be first out. You will be consistently at risk of being layed off. Oh, and don't forget, you are 100% replaceable. If you are getting a 250k offer, know that you are simply filling a hole they can't source with Infosys.

Consider this. Your starting L2 salary is more than a lot of ADs or even L3s ICs make. I've been noticing that we have been firing the actual smart guys and keeping the uneducated, single-tooled yes men/women. Management likes the trogs because they are too dull to be confident. And, let's be honest. Att likes to see us cowering in our corporate slums.

I mean, YES! Great offer, att is a great place to work. Popnfresh is a great leader. Stanker saves. Let the maidens feed them grapes and speak of their awesome manliness.

Another reason for this being a troll post is ATT might be hiring TDP young out of college (at a 1/3 of that salary) but never more.
The real engineers are being hired OFFSHORE every single one of them at 1/4 of that salary range ge-z people wake up. This clearly was a troll post.

OP, If your numbers are true then good negotiation. PMTS max in N3 region ( Includes NJ) goes is 270k so you are very close to max. Your future raises will be low.. just FYI.

Well this is what happens when you lay people off due to RTO.
SHTF and you end up paying more to replace them because now you’re desperate.
It’s just how things go.

Crazy they are paying that, we’ve got tons of people on those roles that have been here not making close to that. Time ask for a raise and update the resume. Thanks for sharing.

Higher end of the NJ range for that title. Take it and run before they change their mind.

@c5

Right on, sibling!

I am seeing new people coming in with no experience in a related field and being given lead roles with higher pay than the experienced employees who have to train them. Disgusting.

An “expert software engineer “ TSR base in NJ is $186,000.

“Expert” is level 3 designation.

Stockholders, just for reference, this guy is being hired to replace a person we laid off that was making $150k. This is how AT&T is being run. Paying people a cool quarter million to sit in a noisy call center boiler room and get nothing done.

Senior MTS here, yes it’s a good offer.

Everyone saying the offer is fake has no idea what they’re talking about.

Even as Senior MTS I make ~$200k TC, am virtual, and live in N2 LCOL area.

$255k base + yearly bonus + connection awards could net you ~$300k if you play your cards right and farm connection awards.

For T it’s a good offer, you’ll have to go to the office 5 days a week though, but it is what it is.

Congrats.

@bb that's not true. We brought in 22 develeopers/engineers higher than midpoint and a couple close to max. It depends on your recruiter and then ultimately the hiring manager.

@bj you were lied to. Take another look at the offer.

I am OP here. To answer some questions, the 255k is base salary. The offer also says there is a 13% bonus, but I have learned not to count on bonuses in my career, so I did not include that in the price. It sounds like that is near the top of the range, and I should not expect any raises. What is the pay distribution in the salary band usually? Is it expected for most employees to remain near the top if they are performing good?

You did not get this offer. It’s above the midpoint and they only offer external hires the bottom of the range for base salary. Don’t be duped by the inclusion of your benefits cash value, bonus, 401k match being included in that 255k. Expect to be offered like $175k base.

It’s very high for PMTS. But know that your growth story stops here, unless personally motivated to get out of this company shortly.

@OP Go to this site, type in AT&T as the "employer" and "2025" for year and you will what they currently pay H1-B employees. Since the law regarding salary (prevailing wages) was changed during Trump's 1st term, now H1-Bs make more than regular US employees with years of experience. You should be getting an offer with similar or above the salaries listed on this site. Good Luck! (The only thing I don't like about this site is it has lots of ads. But just ignore them.)
