Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Laid Off

CP laid me off this week. Since then I am feeling shock, anger, sadness, fear, guilt, and shame. Anxiety about the future leading to feelings of worthlessness. It’s like a bad dream and you keep hoping you wake up and it wasnt really, that you weren’t selected. But you were. You are going to feel anger when you find who remained and question how “they” got to stay and you didn’t. It’s going to hurt.

I wish everyone well on Wednesday.

Someone said don’t take it personally. This is one of the most personal things done to you that doesn’t feel good. You can have ptsd for the rest of your life to deal with. The challenge is to control your anger in the future. With time you will stop blaming yourself and the angry outbursts will go away. Don’t take it out on others especially those who survived. It wasn’t their fall and it wasn’t yours.

Why are you angry at the people who remained?
I feel bad for you for everything else, but being mad at people who probably had no clue who was being chosen is not cool

Don't take it personally. Get back out there and focus on how many rounds you survived. After this many rounds, it might as well be drawn out of a hat. You were kept around. You weren't like the cull of 2014.

Back in 2014, I contributed to the effort to identify who to let go. Those were fairly easy decisions, though there were a few people who treat others like garbage that I wish I had not suggested keeping. Sadly, they remain....

@gc Please share a link to the report that Texas makes them publish.
I am pretty sure you can't and have no idea what you are talking about.

Regardless of the talk about how much they value their employees, everyone is just a number. Chances are good you will land in a better situation. Hold your head up and go forward.

@bm pretty much this… unless you are cozied up to management, if you are a straight male over 40, you are higher up the “cut list”. Just read the report that Texas makes them publish on the demographics of those affected. DEI employees need not to worry as much as everyone else.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I think the hardest part about being laid off, especially for those of us that have been with the company for a long time and have built lifelong relationships, is the feeling that we were kicked out of our second family. My heart goes out to you. I hope you land on your feet.

@bm "it is not you, it is them"
Did you steal this from a divorce counselling column?

If you are feeling angry at your brothers and sisters who remained, then you needed to leave anyway.
If your workplace was healthy, you'd be overjoyed for them despite your misfortune.
Clearly you were in a toxic place and jealousy plus resentment was part of your daily life.

Like others have said, use this as an opportunity for a fresh start. Move on from the toxic environment and try to find a place that you enjoy spending your days.

@OP I was laid off in 2017. Your feelings are the same I had. It’s those then mix and repeat. Pick yourself up, hold your head high and know it’s about numbers. Get out there asap. It’s not you, it’s bad management.

This is not a reflection on you, but on them. They most likely chose you based on you receiving a higher wage, your age or even jealousy of your talents. Its a petty, evil world out there in corporate America and you deserve WAY better. Take time to reset, refocus and respect yourself. You will prevail.

Good luck and best wishes to you! Just focus on looking forward - don’t waste time looking back.

Get your resume updated and begin your job search as soon as you can. I promise there is life after COP.
