Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Sports Company?

It feels more like influencers company at this point. We spend so much marketing dollars on something that doesnt benefit the brand in the long term

@ak loving the doom and gloom, that’s why I’ve been coming here since ‘17. Gotta get some of that negativity from all the koolaid. Keeps me balanced.

@aj

they do but not corporate sports.

the WNBA peaked because it was more honest and relatable compared to the fully monetized and commodotized NBA. same with college sports.

we live in an era where a bunch of twitch streamers can organize amateur sports events that draw millions while gulf capital is grabbing actual sports to launder the reputation of corrupt regimes.

@aj I wouldn’t go that far. People do care about sports. Since 2019 we’ve had Messi finally win the World Cup, Caitlin Clark’s rise, Brady winning in Tampa without Belichick, Saquon making that insane leap, and LeBron breaking records. Sports still dominate headlines and drive record TV deals… it’s the ultimate appointment viewing. The challenge is just capturing those moments as a company.

The leadership and BOD is confused as to what Nike is supposed to represent. It’s a full-on identity crisis where the company is simply lost and employees no longer can internalize the greater mission. My advice: secure your salary while you can and start looking for new opportunities because the economy is only getting worse, and Nike won’t withstand the storm well in its weak state.

@ah when was the last time you remember people caring about a sports moment? For me not since tiger winning the masters in ‘19.

Face it, the new generations don’t care about sports.

As l9ng as all the Karen's of the company can meet their influencer idols...it will remain this way. Just look at the skins line "collab"...when is the last time we had a sports moment the public cared about?
