Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Just got let go by HCSC this morning

FYI: was told we were all safe and bonuses might be impacted, but today was let go. Know of at least 10 others, all from COO's part of the organization.

My manager was let go today. She had been with the company for 18 years. I’m sad about it, she was a good manager.

@af The thing is I do not think that's what's driving these specific layoffs. I'm being told layoff decisions were made blind to performance, which wouldn't be the case if this was a culture issue.

@af The issue is the people that were let go are the people that usually pushed for ideas and initiatives and consistently asked for funding to deliver something other then re-designs of Member facing pages. So if the idea was to keep those that would drive work they let go of the wrong leaders. I honestly think it’s all in preparation of moving platforms to the Cigna platforms and keeping those SME’s vs. keeping HSCS employees.

@af HCSC employees don’t wait for leadership direction. They pulled back funding for 90% of the projects and majority of the work did not get funded for a multitude of reasons. People aren’t idling for the he-l of it. Stagnation in roles with multiple leadership changes combined with the fact that scope for projects widen or tighten based on the tightness of funding, more people have free time but not that much free time. This RIF has always been to protect the bottom line and clear the way for new leadership to fill the roles left behind.

Legacy Cigna folks are included in the layoffs this week.

@af As a legacy HCSC employee this is 100% accurate about HCSC vs Cigna

@af I don’t think you’re wrong by any means. Though I would caution, I think they’re contractually obligated not to layoff Cigna folks for a year. Who knows what happens once that time comes up.

I came over from the Cigna side and it appears this layoff is focused on HCSC folks and I think I have an idea as to why. Please, please do not take what I am about to say as an insult it is not how I intend it to be. I actually think much of this is due to poor leadership on the HCSC side but for those of us coming over from Cigna it has been pretty shocking how little work HCSC teams actually do. It looks like people largely hang out and wait for instruction and due to poor leadership that instruction often never comes. So HCSC people often are not technically doing anything wrong - they simply aren't being given work. In that environment they are considered perfectly good employees who do what is asked. However, HCSC leadership has been meeting heavily now with Cigna teams and is seeing how much the Cigna teams accomplish and rightly or wrongly it is making the HCSC teams look unnecessary to your leadership. It seems to be a cultural difference between the companies. At Cigna work is largely self-directed. If you see a problem you think you might be able to solve you just fix it and then show it to leadership, or if you need resources to do it you tell your leadership what you need and they get it for you. As a result at Cigna we are always busy and always building something because there are always problems to solve. HCSC seems to be more leadership decides what or if something needs to be done and tells their teams who then do the work. The trouble is the leadership there is not driving anything so employees are not delivering much in comparison to their Cigna peers.

I hope that made sense and did not sound bad.

Has anyone heard of someone below a manager level being laid off?

I just got laid off. I am at a complete loss for words. I got a 4 on my review this year and HR did not provide me with an explanation. I dedicated so much of my time to this company for them to let me go like this. HCSC you su-k.

@a3 same exact scenario and didn’t even let me move the stuff from my desktop. Super conniving and fishy behavior for a company this big

@a2 I don't know about Cigna, but I know only Sr Managers - Exec Directors who are being cut. Everyone I know is from the COO's organization (Digital, Stakeholder, etc.), but I know IFM and Pharmacy are being hit today as well.

@a1 100% same story. My boss told me last night it was nothing to worry about. My VP titled the meeting "skip level"....wow. Showed up, HR was there, took my stuff and walked me out without being able to say good bye and thank you to so many. Feeling very duped by leadership.

OMG same. Just got let go as well, my direct wasn’t even aware. And it was so random as we were being told over and over that there was no need to be worried about lay offs. So that su-ks. I have been getting burned out in the last couple of month so maybe came as a blessing in disguise
