Trump administration to add $100,000 fee for H-1B visas

I guess the days of H1B project managers is coming to an end.
A new twist, making the probability of winning the lottery tied to the compensation level, so a candidate making $160k would have 4x the chance of winning as a lower tier competitor.
Should be 500K
@d8 Some onshore roles are required by regulation to remain onshore — particularly those involving sensitive programs like medicaid and medicare. In reality, a portion of that work quietly finds its way offshore through backdoor arrangements. Meanwhile, each onshore employee costs CVS around $200,000 annually — mind-boggling.
@kg YES! 100%
It’s 100k for the first year only, not the renewal fee.
It's a tariff on the importer, right? Which means the consulting company passes it onto the consumer, right?
Imported labor as a commodity? Works for me.
@ap Looks like you typed this with your feet.
Let’s be honest, h1b is suppressing wages through its abuse, displacing americans from the labour force, lowering opex expenses (through a form of servitude), pushing shareholder and exec pay through the roof. The need for h1b talent for the reason it was created is valid but it is completely off the rails.
Remove the abuse and pay American workers fairly.
If you didn't see this coming you weren't paying attention last time.
The H1B visa program was not meant to be used like it has been for the past 20 years. It was meant to be a short term solution to upgrade aging mostly IT infastructures, with the intent that US citizens would maintain the results.
Instead it became a cheap compensated not quite slave labor force that stayed...hello 1861.
As a result we now have high unemployment of citizens who should be at the prime of their career.
This has nothing to due with racism or xenophobia.
I welcome having professional employment in this country return back to its citizens at fair salaries that keep up with inflation.
They will all be eligible for a $100k discount at the Trump admin’s discretion. So you should fully expect a bunch of “Trump is a special little guy, he definitely doesn’t have a small winkydoodle” statements in exchange for business as usual.
Send the entire A&BC Team home and see how many come back
Actually send all h1b in the united states home will be more effective than restrict entry. When send them home, make sure all their property shall be confiscated as repayment for us citizens!
It's 100k per year. That's serious and will effectively bring h1b to a halt. Offshoring? Probably unwise as the president can easily target that next. Not to mention that U.S. companies typically maintain a certain balance between onshore and offshore.
Won't this simply lead to increased utilization of offshore workers? As a result that money leaves the country and the workers are not paying rent, buying groceries, or otherwise contributing to the economy. I suppose the next step is going to be to put some kind of tariff on offshore work.
not nearly enough, it only restricts entry of people that are currently outside of the US ! All those millions of Indian and Chinese who are on H1b inside United States still can roam freely and take away jobs ! deport ALL h1b visa holders ! And all those companies recruiting h1b visas for the last 20 years must pay 10 trillion dollars to American citizens as financial compensations for their amoral practice!
