Every time you even think about buying a house or starting a family there’s another round of layoffs or news of more outsourcing. I can't plan beyond tomorrow with the way things are right now. I would leave if I could, but jobs are scarce so I'm stuck. How are people with families dealing with this, I have no idea.

@ar That’s how Humana does it. For the Louisville area, at least, they pay you just enough (but still woefully below national standards for professional roles) so that you can buy some toys like a fancy new iphone or a fancy new ipad and a fancy to apple watch. And you can have your fancy daily mocha expresso coffee whatever from starbucks. And can afford to get whatever your particular hobby. If you are lucky and are married to someone that makes about the same, you both might be able to afford a relatively mid-sized humble home in a semi-safe part of town.
But then you turn 50 and now suddenly you magically went from being considered a fit person that runs marathons to now being considered and old ge---r that probably cannot remember her/his name and probably cannot toe their own shows and needs assistance to finding their car in a parking garage.
Now you are shown the door from Humana, forced to put your dream home up for sale because you can no longer afford the mortgage and you have to begin selling off all your belongings…mainly because nobody wants to hire someone in their 50’s and you are fearful of becoming homeless. You keep smiling at your spouse because you do not want for them to worry but in your heart you know things look very bleak.
Corporations that have very good professional workers, to force them out in their 50’s is a grave injustice that I think will come back to haunt them someday.
It holds us in bondage.
It is difficult. I am trying not to spend money just in case. It had been like this for a few years. Just when you think it is over, more ERP, then RIFs and now a push to outsource.
That's on purpose. This is ethnic cleansing through economic warfare and migration.
