Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Outside Temporary Techs Layoff

In the SE, the company is letting most if not all construction temp techs (FT & OPT) go and not renewing their contracts. Several in my area of GA were told this week and are taking what’s left of their paid vacation then will be off payroll.

They were hired for the fiber infrastructure project, initially they were told 5 years but appears the economy with high inflation changed the plan. So much for build back better. A lot of other tech companies are laying off employees now too.

Possible other craft layoffs starting next year too.

Some of those terms were better than most of the veteran guys. Those who left for the power companies were smart. Wish we could have made them our top guys so they would’ve stayed.

to temps, do good work and don’t fret, collect unemployment and keep looking to come back. it’s messed up but the nature of the beast.

On the contrary, if you can get away with it, do horrible work, and if you come back, don't join the union until they make you permanent. The beast gets what it pays for.

Not sure about Georgia, but in California, whenever Term OPT employees (term is different from temp in CWA handbook) are released, unless they are incompetent, can walk into any contractor company and get a job with benefits. Of course, it would pay $35/hr instead of union $45, but you have unlimited overtime and OT was cut by AT&T months ago during beginning of Summer. Most likely, you'd make more weekly at the new company. The Big 3 are Quanta, Mastec, and Dycom.

Why would they want to come back? If they get hired back as a temp again, the same thing will happen next time.

Economy and poor business decisions are affecting capital outlay for the company. There have been budget constraints this past two quarters, try ordering supplies or anything else for that matter, it is usually denied.

Growth will be much slower going forward and strategic cuts will happen.

Temporary contractors should alwauys be the first level of cuts. This is a no brainer.

Anyone with the word ‘temporary’ in his or her job title should know to have extensive savings built up.

Good work AT&T...Keep the expenses in check. Profits before personal. The recent uptick in the stock has made some folks alot of money..keep it up.

At&t decided to let the small to midsize outfits lace the neiborhoods with fiber. After they have everything complete in a given area, T swoops in and acquires them, a whole lot cheaper. 10 years ago I thought at&t made the wrong call on FTTC. Now I clearly see what their plan was all along.

Unfortunately for those Techs unless they are able to find other opportunities it won’t be a good holiday season for them or their families.

Praying they have success finding another opportunity because I know how stressful it is to be without a job while trying to find one in a bad economy. Inflation is also at a +40 year high, terrible!
