I noticed that all newer hires have their phone numbers listed as (999)999-9999 in the directory. Also have noticed some of these employees using their personal cell phone lines to conduct business.
Is the company so cheap that they won’t even provide dedicated employee phone lines anymore, or is there a more reasonable explanation for this?

I find it hilarious when I get an email from a "leader" or someone who's worked from home the last 2 years and the number in the signature is a personal cell phone and if brought up in conversation they simply say "fu-k the policy" LOVE working here. I smoke weeed before work, on break, on lunch and before I leave....... come in the office and vibe and laugh at the sh-t show. Im def gonna retire from here
For new hires only, they are seated by the telephone pole and all they need to do is climb the pole to get to the phone. Boomer humor.

you are responsible for entering your own number -either mobile or soft phone (from your computer). "desk phones" are a thing of the past...
Most employees have no desk phones or permanent desks.
My team decided against using phones. I’m going to propose that we begin to use smoke signals, instead. I’m tired of technology.
Most desk phones are gone. Most users have Jabber but some have been deactivated because they don't use it. They just thought they needed a phone. In reality, Skype, Teams, and Zoom are what has taken the place of phones for most employees.
Phone numbers routing to India go by either 999 or 612 (via Minnesota) prefix.

It means they haven't updated their profile. This day and age it's not unusual to use your personal cell with working from home more times than not. Also considering they don't provide corporate cell phones anymore.
You have to enter your soft phone # yourself.
There is no system support or technology onboarding for new hires or transfers. The lack of phone numbers is just the tip of the iceberg for lacking system information.
More accurate answer is they have soft phones and likely do have a number it just wasn’t put in the system.
