Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Hesitant to leave?

Oracle has been losing top technical talent for many years, commonly known to us all as "brain drain". And while I am sure that there is still top talent still at O, I know for a fact there are also still a lot of bozos there as well.
For a long time I was hesitant to leave Oracle, maybe it was just inertia or possibly also a concern about the unkown away from a familiar company, but looking back I am so glad that I left when I did. My career has skyrocketed post-Oracle, I get generous bonuses and pay raises, but most importantly, I feel valued as an employee. Seldom at Oracle did I ever feel truly valued by the managers or directors I worked under.

Very nicely said (OP @1xwq+1injf6r2 ). I think this is a general feeling of all those who finally decide to leave this place, however, it is surprising how many talented people there are who are still hesitant to leave, even though they know that they would be much better off elsewhere. It's a bit strange to me that some are so hesitant to leave.

Yuba City, California has a feral chicken problem, I kid you not.

Somehow, I think that it will be resolved in the next 2-3 years. JMHO

Or do you already consider insects a gourmet meal?

Europe and Canada will be eating insects and cat waste long before the US does. Except for those urban centers full of manbuns. The rest of us know how to hunt

Hahaha. You have no idea what the WEF has in store for you, 401k buddy! XD

What part of "you will own nothing and be happy" do you not understand?

Or do you already consider insects a gourmet meal?

Consider that what pittance US workers get from Social Security is an average of your salaries over your working years.

In the US, especially in the Tech Sector, everyone has a personal 401(k) savings account, that pretty much bypasses Social Security. When you hit the age of 59 you are set for life if you saved wisely. Nearly everyone does.

“ Some are even too close to retirement and figure it isn't really fair to a new employer to take a new position only to leave in a year or two.”

Consider that what pittance US workers get from Social Security is an average of your salaries over your working years. If you are close to retirement and get a better paying position, you should consider it.

The heck whether it’s fair to the employer or not. You gotta look out for #1. No one else is.

It's a bit strange to me that some are so hesitant to leave.

It's alot of things. Fear of change, fear of failure, fear that they could get into an even worse situation. It's inertia. it's a fear that maybe your skills and you have been passed by and you are dinosaur. The fear of losing your soft skills and having to start over.
Some are even too close to retirement and figure it isn't really fair to a new employer to take a new position only to leave in a year or two.

My only advice to everyone except for the last one is to a) take a leap of faith, have belief and confidence in yourself. You acquired years of experience because you were good. If you can do it once, you can do it again. Always believe there is more where that came from. b) if your skills are lagging, take courses and get current! There are plenty of sites you can log onto and take good certifiable course for as little as $20 US. All it takes is desire and sweat. Honest Hiring managers like to see people take the initiative to improve and better themselves. c) Trust your instincts. If after the interview, if it seems the place and position are not right for you, don't take it. Find something that is. More often than not, you will be correct.

If you are ready to make the change, do it, don't wait. If you wish to do so and feel you are not ready, make a plan and get yourself ready. If you are just waiting out until your retirement, good luck to you. Numb yourself to your environment, and count the days.
