New Company Considers Diabetes, Anxiety & Depression a DISABILITY

After being laid off from Wells Fargo this past year I accepted a new position, an $18,000 per year salary increase. This is an internal, exempt permanent position at this new company. One of the employment eligibility forms asked if one had a disability, yes or no.

I was surprised that diabetes and anxiety/depression were on the list for having a disability. I do NOT have diabetes or anxiety/depression but I know diabetes is a disability that my last two Wells Fargo managers told me they had. Just saying reckon you need to prepare to list yourself as "Disabled", at least at some companies if you leave Wells Fargo for some reason.

@szm+1iSPFK8i To be fair, if you expect anyone to believe this tall tale you probably do have an intellectual disability.

It’s not required, but a recruiter called me after I selected me “No”, asking if I wanted to revisit the question. After asking her about it, she made it extremely clear in so many words that it was going to check a box and make HR and the company look good, and would effect me in no way at all.

I switched it to “yes”, and got the job, and have been promoted since.

I am never surprised by how id--tic the masses are. This post is a reason.

As the one person with a brain stated, federally defined. There are no “special” disabilities. Not required to disclose. WF DOES ask this same question. Ever heard of PTSD? This is a form of anxiety that leads to depression when not treated. Some that have diabetes also have seizures, faint spells and can go into a coma.

If any of you people have a problem with “woke/cancel” culture, as I do, please educate yourselves because you sound like (at best) buffoons and (at worst) insensitive twits that fuels those woke warriors.

Interesting, I did not know that you do not have to disclose a disability if you do not want to.

I had a mental breakdown (work induced) a few years ago and forever have to mark “yes” to disabled as a result.

Honestly, it hasn’t affected me in the least bit to other jobs I’ve applied for. I’m a ridiculously hard worker and high performer in my current job so no one cares, and HR is thrilled they get a tick mark to help with diversity quotas.

I’m a straight white Christian male so I would probably be much more screwed if I didn’t have that “yes” to mark.

What is defined as a "disability" is set by federal law and state laws, and WF follows the law.

And no, you don't get "perks" for having a disability. But you do get federal law protection against discrimination for having a disability.

And you do NOT have to disclose a disability here or anywhere else. The law also says it can be asked, but not compelled to disclose.

Uh... These are currently considered disabilities at Wells Fargo as well. What in the world are you talking about? Wells Fargo doesn't even define disabilities. They follow federal ADA and state laws like every other company.

I hope an HR specialist chimes in. Do team members with a special disability get additional perks for lack of a better description?
