So I have been at Wells for two years now and although it has a lot of internal problems the work life balance along with a comparable market pay rate for my role is not a bad deal. I work in the CIB line of business.
Unfortunately the CIB business cannot really grow with the asset cap and also historically has been a small player compared the larger firms in terms of products offered and scale of business. Management keeps saying they want CIB to be a top 5 players but I feel like they are 10 years behind from the competition.
Knowing that Wells is under trouble and given that there are little opportunities to grow within CIB, along with the impending recession/layoffs if you had the chance would you take a year or two to upskill yourself or go to another large bank doing the same role for a slightly higher salary. Moving to a larger more mature Bank that has a good CIB business is always good on the resume but I don’t want to get pigeon holed doing the same role.
I am kind of bored in my current role and have identified several things I can do form an upskilling perspective which can hopefully give me more optionality with other roles inside and outside the bank.
However, the low morale, senior management who are just there collecting a paycheck while doing the bare minimum and waiting for retirement, poor technology, Charlie’s cost cutting mandate, catching my managers play games on their phone majority of time, offices where I am the only one who shows up to meet the 3 day mandates significantly impacts my mental health.
Any tips/advice is would be appreciated.
