Scarcity of fully remote positions

The last time I was looking at job openings (about a year ago) there were so many available positions that were fully remote. At the time, I decided not to leave, but now I realize that might have been a mistake. I've started looking again recently with plans to leave, but now remote jobs are few and far between. This is disheartening, to say the least since RTO is the main reason why I'm looking to leave. Am I just looking in the wrong places or are most of the good remote options really gone?

There are jobs out there you can negotiate remote into, depending on how rare your skills are and how much the company is willing to trust you. I’m giving notice tomorrow - negotiated full remote for a role advertised as hybrid because I ticked all the boxes.

Also got a 22% raise, LTI converted to new company (better stock price, same # of shares and vesting schedule) and a sign on. Not all the best tech people are gone yet, but there’s less of us every week.

Don’t give up!

How remote do you want to be? There are plenty of jobs open in India.

There are some companies that were offering remote, and then changed it. There are also companies like USAA that have switched to more hybrid options.

depends on where you look and what your skills are. But the job market isn't booming like it was a year ago, that's for sure. Lots of news about fintech companies rescinding offers, facebook hiring freeze, etc.

They aren’t bringing over h1b workers to replace burger flippers at mcd’s or blue collar jobs, so i’m not sure why you’d compare the h1b stats to total workforce.

You are absolutely right, we should bring upward of 500,000 H1 workers each year from China.

That our total 497,000 financial analysts in US population will be fired every few years for the new group!

How is 80,000 jobs per year screwing over the >150 million already employed Americans?

Do you realize it takes 15 years for them to place 1 million H1B jobs?

If America fails because of that we've got far, far more significant problems.

Because 80,000 jobs for H1b starts in April every year. Then there are H4, OPT and L1

There are always minimum 80,000 jobs less today than last year. Year after year.
And for unknown reasons, we are dead set in filling those jobs from China and India.

And 80,000 h1b visa will be guaranteed, regardless if we really need more analyst, nor if you and i are laid off today

Yeah there’s a recession looming so jobs have slowed; companies that needed to lure workers with remote flex did so and some aren’t offering more. I jumped ship almost a year ago with a fintech and fully remote role. They’ve since changed stance on remote and have grandfathered those of us fully remote and are mainly looking to hire in their office locations with remote flexibility for certain roles/skills. So basically depends on how in demand your skill set is and how much a company needs you if they may offer flexibility. Never hurts to ask if you see “hybrid” they may be open to a fully remote.

Unemployment is at a historically low rate (3.6% as of the latest update for May), all of the remote jobs were snatched up long ago.

Are you not paying attention to US economic news?

Jobs are disappearing regardless of their location. Companies are scared and reacting appropriately.
