Nothing new there. The company routinely spends billions on the "good idea of the week" only to scrap it and go in another direction a few years later. CPG getting rid of all cubical walls and then paying cut rate contractors to put some flimsy ones up after COVID hit is par for the course. They tried to push people out of the office for years, now they reverse course again. The only good news here is that at some point new leadership is bound to reverse course on RTO.
I've been WFH for over 12 years. This RTO thing is flying in the face of a productive employee. While WFH, I've been recognized as a star performer, been given kudos for jobs well done. However, on the flip side, I've never advanced. I've seen my coworkers advance, and guess what, they are all in the office. It seems that those personal connections matter more than work. I'd never have believed it until I saw it with my own eyes. And its not a one-off either. Many, and I mean, MANY folks have moved up that were in the office and not WFH. Whatever.
To the main question - career or job - at this point, a JOB is all I have. So, I'll take job with WFH over career in the office - hands down.
I find it interesting that over the last couple of decades, we were moving towards a WFH environment. We even moved from desktops to the more expensive laptops to make the transition. Now with this whole Covid thing, the are doing a “180” and reverting back. They are even taking our laptops away and will just have walk up devices. No more pandemics because people won’t be able to WFH. I don’t know what their end game is. None of it makes sense.
I couldn't care less about advancement. I don't want my bosses job. My current one is perfect for me. Can I go back to WFH now?
Everyone else on my team complains about the 2 people on the team who would prefer a 30-minute voice call than a 1-2 line text/Email. Evern the terse person who would rather call than text is annoying.
If you're talking about efficiency, stop doing things that are inefficient. Otherwise, you're just another greedy corporation.

Work is always business. Only the naive think 'caring' comes into it from either side.
RTO all the way. We're all highly disposable. 'Caring' doesn't come into it.
You do a decent job at work, but it's not due to 'caring'. It's you fulfilling your end of the agreement. You work, they pay you.
Decades ago it wasn't like this, at least not as much, but it's the way it is now.
This idea that building relationships can only happen in person is for geriatrics and low-functioning adults. Normal people are fully capable of talking on the phone, sending emails and IMs.
Almost 20 years at WF. My career growth is a non-starter under the current administration (and the previous ones prior). Too many promises, too many re-orgs, and too much solutioning and trying to convince the powers that be and getting nowhere.
That retirement light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger and bigger. Unless something really gets going here to where my knowledg and expertise is respected, it is just a job.
