Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Incompetent Managers

I have noticed a trend with Wells that they tend to hire managers with no experience. I have been with Wells several years and worked in a couple of different departments. Each time I have worked under managers that have to rely on their direct reports to learn the job. These managers don't know the systems, they don't know or understand what the department does, they don't know the policies or procedures, they come in with nothing going for them that I can see. These managers can not help their direct reports with anything. But, they rely on the direct reports to help them. I just don't get it. I will say they have previous management experience but no experience with the work of the department. Why does the bank do this? Why not promote folks in the department instead?

The WORST decision I ever made was coming to work here, and I attribute that mostly to the incompetent, gas lighting managers.

@2yup+1hKvjuUJ...don't turn this thread into a DEI issue. Incompetent managers at Wells has nothing to do with DEI. The incompetence I have seen was long before any DEI mandates and even before Charlie Scharf.

Thanks for this information. Now I know why certain managers were douchebags & why I left. No experience in banking= insecure, taking it out on the team.

3uoe+1hKvjuUJ.... no not misogynist at all. But, the poster I was responding to seems to think POC are the incompetent managers. IME, I have had two white managers at Wells that were what the OP described. So, the point I was making is that incompetentence has nothing to do with race.

You must by misogynist because the best managers I had here were female, and I’m a guy. They seem to pay better attention to details and their team member needs. Of course that was before Chuckles made us employees.

Increasingly, new managers from inside the organization will have little experience because one has to make the jump to 7 directs minimum. Byproduct of the stupid spans and layers effort.

2yup+1hKvjuUJ...Does DEI hire include white females? Because the incompetent managers I have had have been white women.

My first manager was phenomenal. After several years of a great team, we were broken up and reassigned to different managers who had no idea what we did, mostly MIA, and basically not engaged with us.

Of course, my first manager, the good one, was let go a couple years later. Probably because they pushed back on things that didn’t make sense and stood up for their team.

Hiring inexperienced managers happens on purpose for several reasons:

  • They're (usually) cheaper
  • Senior mgmt wants to control them more easily than they could an experienced manager. This is sometimes worth it to senior mgmt to pay above minimum salary
  • Many inexperienced managers are DEI hires. Senior mgmt knows these are token placements and thus these tokens simply cannot have too much in the way of responsibility. (For the record, someone simply being a non-White straight male does NOT make one a DEI hire. A DEI hire is always a token that was hired to check a demographic box instead of actual qualifications.)

In all of my years of IT type employment I do not recall any former Managers who yelled and screamed at me for some minor thing, like there was ONE record missing in a report, etc. Maybe some Managers had a calm discussion with me over some things.
My first two Managers at Wells Fargo were great. They both left for other positions and I got "bounced" around among some new Managers who seemed VERY OK with yelling and screaming at me for things like a BRD needs to be completed ASAP, or the business requirements changed and the target date has to be moved, etc. NOT good with having a work Manager call me up and yell and scream at me when they did not have the skills to do the work themselves. Subject of recent Wells Fargo layoff and NOT missing being yelled and screamed at for giving my ALL to do a good job for the former company. Yeah. How I am felling about comments on this post. Still REALLY appreciate the nice, kind, technically and business wise competent first two original Wells Fargo Managers. They were GREAT Managers and I have very happy memories of working for them at Wells Fargo.

I think I’ve had the same boss pretty much everywhere I’ve worked in this org and honestly the higher up the chain the worst it gets (ie, my manager might be competent but everyone above them doesn’t have a clue)

God, I have to respond to this. I came out of an early retirement 6 months ago due to some boredom and what I thought would be a fairly easy technical role as an individual contributor (lured in by a recruiter). I used to manage a team of analysts at a smaller but still quite large regional bank (~20-30,000 employees) before my early retirement. It has been a shock working here. My current manager is such a fu----g id--t that it just absolutely boggles my mind. In my nearly 20 years with my previous company I never, ever encountered this level of gross incompetence. I tell my husband repeatedly that working at Wells Fargo makes me feel like a super genius. My manager does NOTHING and has no idea how to do the job. He serves absolutely no purpose for me other than to direct all of my questions to my colleagues; I have finally learned to not even bother asking him anything.

Most recently, I've argued with him several times that his conclusion on how to approach a particular project is just wrong. I've been very careful and very, very tactful since I don't want to hurt his little ego, but my god at a certain point I just want to scream at him to listen to me and that he is WRONG. It's the kind of wrong where 2+2 does NOT equal 3, but he insists that it's 3. How did he get this job? I came very close on Friday to writing up my resignation. I have since decided that I don't particularly care and I'm going to make him out to be the incompetent fool that he is and enjoy every second of it while looking for a new role with another company with fewer id--ts. I'm frankly embarrassed to put this company on my resume.

Managers are as toxic as the company. It's the only wasy they keep their jobs. Don't be fooled.

Not only are they incompetent, but they gaslight, undermine & put you down for doing a good job. Never seen it anywhere else. The culture supports it too, as others have posted.

Currently dealing with a manager who appointed someone in a position due to a fairly abrupt departure of someone who previously held the position. The person appointed had no clue. The manager had no clue. A lot of people are now upset. Work is piling up.

Always been that way, always will be. Get out of that Circus. They don't want anyone competent challenging it.

I have worked with 2 managers at Wells Fargo that were jaw-dropping incompetents. One was just MIA. Never around, didn’t read emails or pay attention in meetings, relied on his team to explain to him what was going on over and over and over … I really think he had something like AADD wrong with him. Besides being a lazy, arrogant jerk.

The other one actually admitted to me that she could never leave because nobody else would “cut her the slack” - her words - WF did. And these people were protected and in positions to judge the performances of others.

I have seen incompetence at other companies, but never have I seen it rewarded like I have here. People don’t believe me when I tell them.
