Curious about everyone’s monthly commuting cost.
Here’s mine:
$200/month to park
30 miles round trip 3 days/week costs me roughly $50 for gas
So… I’m paying $250/month to sit in an office 12 times and spend the day on conference calls, how about you?

Had to join a car pool. Lucky to not have a parking fee. So depending on how many weeks/month I end up being the driver, $40-$80/month. Would be nicer to just work from home though.

I would be accepting of RTO if there was some common sense and intelligent rationale behind the decision. And/or we worked for a leadership team who was progressive in their thinking, and therefore I had trust in their decisions.
But the “butts in seats because I said so” philosophy propagated by our outdated out-of-touch overpaid self-serving C-Suite has most employees feeling resentful.
$6 for gas

$3.50 for dry-cleaning
My wife never got RTO from her employer (rn at hospital). We car pool as it is on my way to office. So maybe an extra gallon a week.
It is 30 minutes each way so I am out 3 hours. But I usually worked that extra hour a day but do not anymore.
Parking is free.
Lunches run about $30, for all three days, but I do brown bag often so on average $10 or so a week. But even WTF I'd go get carryout once a week.
I do take my shirts to the cleaners and that is $9 @ week.
Not counting the hours, it is under $50 a week.
Costs me $20/day for gas and parking, and 1.5-2 hours commuting. Prior to covid I was only in the office 1 or 2 days per week. So, if I were to go in 3 days a week it would be an added $120/month and 10 additional hours in traffic/ month from pre covid. Not worth the loss in time alone.
Gas is approaching $5 a gallon here, 45 min commute one-way, mostly interstate. Average mpg is 20. I would be thrilled about $50 a week in gas. Parking is free but I can't always bring lunch from home and nearby restaurants prey on the "downtown masses". You can't find a $5 lunch anywhere. Looking at $10 most places.
OP- you forgot about the additional wear/tear/mileage on your car, dry cleaning bills b/c you gotta wear work clothes now, and lunches out. I figure these pointless 3 days per week are costing me an extra $500 p/month easy.

$100 extra gas
$50 dry cleaning
$150-200 for bfast/lunch
Pain and suffering\mental anguish = impossible to even quantify

About a gallon of gas and a wasted hour of production per day, free parking, so that's nice.
I worked from home.
I have a pretty short commute with free parking. That's one of the reasons I chose this job.
and what did you do before? If you want to keep working from home find a job that will allow it.
