Well, when Paul Singer's Elliot Management hedge fund bought 3+ billion dollars worth of stock a few years ago, they hoped to influence AT&T to focus on core competencies and reduce the layers of "leadership" AKA management. I watched a webcast with Stankey, Mc Elfresh and Bill Morrow (from Elliot Management) in which Bill stated that AT&T was management heavy, nine levels... McElfresh actually stated on this webcast in response to Stankey that " You cannot cost cut your way to success". Well nothing happened and Elliot Management cut their losses and sold. Luckily we had a CEO in Stankey that knew more about media than anyone.
I remember when I left I saw Directors with no reports. WTH.
I guess they have to keep them for bargaining with union labor strikes.
There were definitely too many VPs when I left.
I still don't understand how the company functions.
The company is top heavy in CEO’s, CFO’s, SVP’s, EVP’s, and AVP’s! All they do is pass spread sheets and PowerPoint decks to each other!! You could reduce overhead by 50% and still run the company!!
Not for long…..
