Sounds like fake news or, at best, something that applies to a specific group. What I don't understand is the top number. I mean, if you have 17 directs are you in twubble or something?

Some do, some don’t. Depends on what they are managing.

But performance reviews, escalating the voices or complaints from those they manage, and ensuring things are evenly distributed across the team comes with the territory

Span of control is dying in Corporate Risk. Offshore resources now count in a Manager’s span of control and some Managers are allowed to have less than 7 (the old standard).
