Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Being laid off is the good option!

The number of people still afraid of being laid off is astounding when all of you should be praying to find your name on that list. A layoff is the perfect way out of this craphole. You are paid to leave, you can get unemployment as a little extra, and there's no stigma about being fired. What is there to be afraid of?

I’ve been through enough layoffs and been surplused 5 times. Being laid off sucks for the majority of us because generally we’re all here to make a living, provide for our families, etc. I don’t look forward to mine or anyone else’s names to be on the surplus list.

Hey, a lot of people did what their parents wanted them to do: go to college and graduate so you can get a “good job”, not surviving by payday loans and a prayer like they did. If I had known about union gigs when I was 17, things may have turned out differently. At least my dad is proud of me. Who knew “promised” benefits were a lie.

All managers did not come through craft.

I was a Union tech for 41 years. I never had these issues. But then I no title.
Just made a lot of $$$ and retired with health care.
To add, if one figures out the hourly wage of entry level first line managers they are the lowest paid people on the crew.
But hey...you chose it.

“Perhaps they should have thought of that before they went in to management. Maybe they could sell the little name plate on their desk. ZFG.”

This comment shows the posters relative struggle to grasp how “time” works.

Employees joined management over 20 years ago, when the company’s policy reflected retaining employees that deliver consistent performance. Two years ago, that policy pivoted to remove retirement, time-off, and medical benefits from experienced managers and instead hire new, inexperienced employees at presumably a much lower salary. Those new inexperienced managers come in, get a year of onboarding, mentoring and networking - and then promptly leave to work for Amazon, Google, and other companies desperately trying to retain management employees and pay an even higher salary.

We do the same thing to employees as we do to business investments. Telecom has consistently paid the rent. But we Telecom was looking “dated”. T-Mobile, DIRECTV, WarnerMedia all looked “fresh” so we tried bringing them on board. T-Mobile took a grumpy in our bed. DIRECTV cut off our finger with a vodka bottle. WarnerMedia was blackout drunk half the time. But who’s paying the rent? Telecom.

Personally I agree but I'm near retirement. I'm just hanging around until the next one and then I go.

But 5-10 years ago I would not have said the same.

The Stink has figured out that it is better to rebadge people, make people so miserable that they leave on their own - Toxic T does not pay people to leave anymore.

If T would once in its miserable policy decide to pole most employees and ask if they would be willing to accept an offer to leave the company if incentivized, then everyone would be happier and less threatened. The employees that are willing to leave can have the opportunity to leave on good terms and those that want to stay and contribute to the success of T can stay and perform at peak levels. A very simple solution to headcount reduction!
