Mid Year Performance Reviews

Anticipating an email this month about the mid-year review cycle and the critical 'self-evaluation' that we all need to fill out.
Can we do a survey and see who wants to scrap this BS?
Corporate Americas performance appraisal process hasn't changed since I started here nearly 20 yrs ago.....everyone involved thinks its a dreadful experience.
Employees hate writing the self-eval, but managers depend on it because they otherwise wouldnt be able to write you a review. Managers hate writing these and hate delivering them even more.
They often dont say a word to you all year about performance, but then insert critical feedback into your year end review so they can pass scrutiny from HR/leadership reviews.
The whole process sucks and isn't authentic.
My solution - end it altogether.

Are they forced to stack rank people and give a certain amount below meets?

Managers should get your name right on your review. Come on. Also, don’t copy and paste comments that do not transfer from one employee to another. No excuses.
This company puts up with some incompetent managers who should have been gone a long time ago. There is no value add from bad management and they create risk being here.

To the poster below whose manager pasted comments... Absolutely sucks for the affected employees, but for managers who went from, say, three to ten directs without any pay or bonus increases, I won't begrudge them that. Some managers were put in horrible situations last year.

These are nothing but a waste of time.

they do spot check reviews and was under the impression that they scan them through some tools that look for copy and paste. they want to make sure eveyones is unique so hopefully managers are changing just enough so that it doesn't get picked up by the algorithms.

I particularly loved when a manager copied and pasted comments into reviews for multiple employees and forgot to change the names, so the name of and comments about Employee A were copied into Employee B’s review, etc. Several on the team had a good laugh at the manager’s laziness and lack of attention to detail. We are shocked that very ineffective manager is still here….but he is.
