Ethicsline alternatives

Looking for advice here, I have a situation whereby certain managers in my area have announced external candidates that will be hired in high level positions prior to the jobs being posted. I have serious doubts that HR or even the ethicsline will do anything and would also like to avoid retaliation from my area by bringing it up. Therefore I ask, are there any alternative places to report said actions?

Yep and God forbid you do a good job as a new hire- they will be out for you! Been there, done that.

Ethics Line and HR are both charged with protecting the company. Not with protecting you.

Escalate to Social Media. But you need to be right. Not just whining.

“ Ethicsline is monitored by a third party now, it’s safe to use..”

Bwahahahahaha! So even if it’s monitored by a third party, who cares. What’s the first step after a complaint? Someone calls the manager who did the hiring without a posting, and starts asking them questions to verify what happened. It would then be easy to tell someone reported it and easy for them to guess who actually did the reporting based on the details provided. Any details you provide can be used or shared at their description as they investigate. Been on the other end of that. Being managed by a third party doesn’t make any difference to me.

Does anyone have issues calling into the ethics line if they can use voice recognition to figure out who you are? There isn't an email address supplied- does anyone have (truly) anonymous ethics line contact info ?

Ethics and HR are both useless. They want "fresh blood" since experience and knowledge base is not valued at WF. Plus, the new (JP) recruits come in at far higher salaries then a WF applicant could ever get. Yes, it's fuct. Get out.

My manager had senior position opening. I wanted to get that, so i can move up. He told me not to apply, then he will have to open my position and more paper work for him. Told me he will give me promotion in year end review, but he never did that. Just made excuses. I am always thinking if it was ethical for him to stopping me applying for the position. He just stopped my growth.

OP,
Call the ethics line and tell them what you are seeing.

Replying to "WF is considered a federal contractor and must comply with EEOC, VEVRA and other affirmative action programs.". No matter how you coat "affirmative action", it is discrimination plain and simple. The Ministry of Truth may disagree, but they also think that 2+2=5.

OP here, thank you qhf+1gE9DTMC, it is exactly what you mention, a concern with EEOC. I was not interested in the role for myself but I had hoped my manager (who is now leaving due to this issue) would apply. The positions were posted and amazingly the external person was given the job (even with lower experience and less skills. It is the unethical situation of announcing a position, which will get it and then ignoring the other candidates that is concerning.

WF is considered a federal contractor and must comply with EEOC, VEVRA and other affirmative action programs. Call or use EEOC for complaints. We got in trouble for hiring w/o consideration about 8-10 years ago. The newbie managers probably don't know this...or that we are subject to fed regs....sigh, so history and bad practice repeat themselves.

I think the solution is to do the bare minimum at your job. Most teams are going to go with external candidates because choosing someone internal will just create another position to fill at a lower position. The people who are hurt most about predetermined external hires are the ones going above and beyond to show they are ready for the promotion. Don’t do that. You’re literally just giving away free labor. My solution is to do the bare minimum and if you’re looking for a promotion, look outside your team or the company.

Sounds like management wanted fresh eyes/blood/etc.

Can't necessarily blame them.

When companies always hire internally, that company becomes inbred pretty quickly. Same stale ideas, etc.

I'm glad we no longer live in the 1960s when all open jobs simply went to the lesser of the evils instead of the most qualified candidate in the eyes of the hiring manager.

My guess is that OP felt entitled to one of the roles. That's what happens with inbred thinking, and that's at least partly why external candidates were chosen.

Curious - what do you see as the ethical issue here? Is there a law or policy that says all jobs need to be posted?

I understand it is frustrating for those who think they would have been strong candidates. But if the person making the decision doesn't want to look internally, on what grounds do we force them to do so?

Same thing is going on in my group. Cadidates are identified before the posting is up. It's been going on this way for years. Discussions are held first with management, then the panel interviewers endorse.

This has been going on for years. All corps do it and it's the unspoken rule.
