Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Do you think hybrid work mode is a temporary event?

I just read 2 articles one about BofA and the other one about Google.
BofA article was saying that bofa is skipping hybrid mode and going straight to 5 days in office one. Also article mentioned that in SanFrancisco big employers are in bed with SF mayor who wants people to come to the city and spend money there. My personal goal is to spend close to zero of my money in this city that looks like wasteland thanks to the same mayor.
Google article was an interview with ex-hr who said that most of the companies will be back to 5 days in the office within next 2-3 years. He gave two reasons: 1) people who will be in the office will be getting perks/promotions more likely vs employees who either hybrid or wfh. 2) we still have too many “old school dinosaurs” leaders who want to rule people in the office and not remotely. Most of those leaders want 5days in the office now the only thing that keep them at bay is employees-work-market.

What do you think?

Either way, I gave up on hoping for WF and am leaving in May. I’m not in a hub and I see what the future holds. There are other firms that allow remote work, so I’ll take my chances.

If that's their goal, why wait? Turn the laptops off now and people would have to work in office already. I'm not seeing with virtual desktop has to do with it. If anything, it makes not working on the office easier.

Does Bank of America not get it? I could bring my skill there but they are work in office na-is. Do they not understand people will leave them for even a WF? Well that is it? Charles in charge says we have a better option than BoA, so willing to let you leave to hire someone at a lower rate all too happy with three days in office. Bottom line for me these SOBs screwed thousands of people who were 100 percent remote as defined in their offer letter, just like me. So yes, I will leave for a 100 percent remote role when that opportunity happens. Until then it is 1-2 days a week in office until someone bi----s.

Not true. It’s already started, and not in only SF. It does lock down the local device but it still allows for remote connectivity.

The whole virtual desktop process will eliminate the hybrid model. Once they put that in and disable the laptops, you wont have any choice but to work in an office.
and it will start here in SF

WFA has already subtly implied hybrid is not permanent in communications. Already hearing lots of rumors from managers that this is the case. No masks, no testing, no reason for hybrid is the feeling

If you are a mid-level manager with not many directs (under 20)
and you are not in a hub location, you should be looking for another position ASAP

There will never be a truly company wide policy on this. There never has been before either, so that's nothing new. Sure, they could try, but it's literally impossible in some groups. You're not staffing underwriters with a 5 days a week in the office, for example. Those job posting will sit there until the recruiters die of old age. Certain tech jobs are the same way, unless you only want to hire unqualified / unskilled people to do these jobs. They have other options, which probably pay more anyway. Chuckie tantrums and demands from the high tower in NYC don't change that.

In any case, I don't think Charles really cares about RTO one way or another, it's simply a blunt instrument to get people to leave without paying severance. The good news is, chuck is a "turn around CEO". He won't be around long, all things considered, and the next CEO will have different priorities and hopefully not be an id--t.

@1slb BofA has been 5 days in office since March 1, 2022. I’m employed there it’s a fact and it s*cks. Would love hybrid model.

nope - wishful thinking by those who live in hub locations.

i've seen the plan and it's very clear. 100% remote is being eliminated over time regardless of location.

You should know that you’re 100% wrong. Hubs are the future, and once attrition goals are met the plan is to allow for remote work from hub areas.

@1jxt+1g2dunBY - Sadly this antiquated approach will just speed up Wells Fargo’s decline into the trash heap of failed companies who did not adapt. Stick with it if you must, but I’m getting the f-ck out!

Yeah, don't get me started on the incessant donation requests. I support two charities, and only those two. Not giving a dime to anything else through work, no matter the pressure.

nope, full time in the office is coming.

with the united way cam'pain' coming, it is infinitely easier to hassle and lean on us to pay the protection money in person, than it is to harass us through email.

@1jxt+1g2dunBY this 100%. WF was moving away from wfh prior to the pandemic. We had people leaving from my area for that reason. When the pandemic hit, it just kicked the can down the road. Management also knows that many of the "star players" have already left for better roles that permit the wfh option. What is left will either bend and come in or will find themselves unemployed. They will either hire someone in the US for you to train, or, preferably to management, find a way to offshore your job. At that point, if you are still resistant to coming back in, they will fire you for job abandonment. No severance, no unemployment. Good luck.

for all of you rabid "he-l no I won't RTO" folks:

by making hybrid a failure by continuing to whine, resist, and just not showing up.... the outcome will NOT be that the firm suddenly sees the light and allows full remote.

it will be that they get firmer and harsher about enforcement, and then impose even more restrictions/less freedom (I.e. no hybrid, go back to 5 day expectation).

The company's long term strategy on location (beyond the short term focus of RTO) is to completely eliminate 100% remote workers in non customer facing/non operations roles - whether near a hub or not near a hub.

For those saying "plenty of other options" - you should start working your plan. It's only going in one direction here.

OP, the facts are known about B of A. what do you mean that they are skipping hybrid and going to 5 days... they are in fact in a hybrid model now. so much for skipping. did you make up the other article too?

It is temporary, but will last until September at least. That's when the contact center employees return.

I heard for the better part of two years that my permanent WFH was going to be canceled. My agreement was "torn up" but they never told me I had to be in an office. Fast forward a decade, if you want more of my life than the evenings and weekends I already sacrifice you can get bent and performance manage a star player out.

I have options. WF doesn't factor into all of them.

I think the hybrid for Wells is temporary. By the end of the year, some teams will be back on a pre-pandemic 5 day a week schedule. Other teams, will be allowed to WFH or do a hybrid but that will only be a few or case by case type thing. I hope I am wrong because I want to WFH indefinitely. I don't want to go back at all.

The pros of WFH vs office easily overcome the medicore promotion advantage. The HR person is thinking of the old and traditional ways. Most people have a better chance of comp increase by switching jobs.

May the dinosaurs move on or become extinct sooner rather than later. Profits over all else is capitalism at its worst.

Innovate.
Use office spaces for housing.
Retrain those displaced.
Is it easy? No. But neither were prior revolutions (e.g., industrial, automotive, computer, digital).
We have not progressed if we cant adapt and.meet this moment

And if we can't adapt, other forces like Mother Earth will force us to.

As long as there are more sensible companies allowing 80-100% remote, the dinosaur companies can kick rocks for all I care. I'd kind of expect it of BofA, but I have to say I'm really shocked at Google if that's true. Dissapointing.
