Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Please hear me out

I’ve been struggling with why we’re being forced back into offices to sit with people we don’t know or work with. I’m not going to learn anything other than some random’s March Madness brackets standing by the invisible water cooler in my building.

I apologize if this was brought up before, but what if they’re trying to catch people who moved with no notice on this RTO nonsense? Really nothing else makes any sense. Maybe someone on a San Francisco salary moving to a lower tax area like Texas or Florida? They may have updated their W-2 but are still getting a higher cost of living salary because they didn’t inform corporate??

Does this have any teeth??

Probably because that three minute task got punted to four different teams, who most likely prioritized it at the bottom before it finally got done.

No, it means that when they go back to the office, the actual work needing to be done will slow to a complete crawl. You'll submit forms but the people doing the work will have less time to do it because they are ramping up and down each day, along with more excuses to avoid that work for as long as they can.

Most day-to-day work is done stateside. App dev, permissions, rights, back-end support, and automation tasks are being done internationally.

So there really are no productivity increases due to people working from home and putting in more hours but rather it just looks that way on a spreadsheet or powerpoint because the process is being followed.

It would follow then that when all these highly productive employees go back to the office, nothing will really change because the processes have so much fat built into them (long or no SLA's). I'd also assume most 'day to day' work is done offshore which would render the RTO argument moot.

Either way, I have no skin in the game after next week but for all the commenters waxing lyrical about huge productivity drops when RTO starts, I'm not sure it will make much difference.

Don't forget the slowdown from the international chip shortage and supply line issues! That has had a huge impact on speed lately. When you're unable to get new equipment and have to spend time repairing older stuff to get it out the door, that impacts SLA. When you just don't have an ETA from a distributor due to low supply, that messes up the SLA. It increases wait times, but it's out of our control.

5 day SLA? Those haven't been around for most departments for years now. SLA's in general were canceled or pushed back further.

The increased productivity includes the metrics, forms, procedures, and workflow all combined. It may take a bit longer due to fewer employees, employees being sick, staff changes, and sometimes procedural changes. All of those can affect how fast something gets done. But as long as processes are followed, it counts as productivity.

I'm not debating 'shoulder taps'. 'No walk ups' has been the rule of thumb for the last 20 years and as an IT person, I agree.
What I am asking is where all this supposed productivity from folks working extra hours at home is precisely? It is certainly not obvious to anyone in the business I support. When a five day SLA goes on for six weeks, I'm calling BS on it.

PS: I don't want to RTO myself so my last day is 3/11 but from my standpoint, productivity has gone to he-l in the last couple of years.

As jobs are centralized amongst teams, business process are enforced specifically to keep shortcuts and shoulder taps to a minimum. Just because you need something fast doesn't mean there aren't hundreds or thousands of people in front of you in line. No one has the right to cut that line. Shoulder taps and interruptions increases the wait times of others so you should be following process and getting in queue.

JIRA is a waste. But its a business process that load balances the work load amongst a team. Days of shoulder taps are long gone. You follow processes, submit forms and requests, and the more you complain about them the further down on the list you go.

I opened a Jira for a task that I know takes no more than three minutes (I used to do them myself) and it took six weeks. Not sure where all this 'added productivity' is. Must be somewhere else other than where I am (in IT supporting a business unit).

You'll be surprised that the water level will be just below 'puddle'. You think things are slow or problematic now, just wait until everyone is miserable and using all of the numerous easy to find ways to avoid work in an office. You wait until people keep a strict schedule and take longer to ramp up in the morning and begin to ramp down earlier in the afternoon or evening. Watch how much worse it gets.

For all the folks who claim they're working extra hours everyday, I'm sure there's just as many sitting on their a$$ watching TV and taking advantage. Some might work less after RTO but a lot will actually have to work for a change which will even things out. Water will always find its own level eventually.

Yeah OP, you really need to understand the objectives here. The #1 goal of RTO is voluntary attrition. They want the company down under 200k employees, under 150k if possible. Productivity, employee happiness etc. isn't relevant. It's really not. They could care less. Whatever will get the most people to quit in the shortest amount of time without a bunch of viable lawsuits is "the plan", and it's being pushed hard by an unholy alliance of CPG and the militant cost cutters across many groups but really it all comes back to the board. They brought charlie in to slash and burn, the next CEO will be the long term nice guy that isn't actively trying to chase people off.

Because the powers-that-be are trying to get you the quit.

RTO is going to cause many coworkers to make love to each other.

At the 12 month mark, most employees will have made love to nearly everyone on their floor.

Being in person works if the people you actually work with are in person. However, they are not here. Why do I have to drive to an office to use Skype because the people I work with are located in other states?

I think it has more to do with tax breaks, local/state politics in major hubs where the bank operates, a desire to not ki-l off a commercial real estate industry has the bank probably has significant financial interest in, etc.

When you travel, the destination is the data. That is an incorrect association. That would be a different thing all together. You're not going to work for the experience of being in a building. You are going to do work - to shape, manage, or support data. That data is no different depending on where you are. Your ability to work with that data in office or outside of office is no different.

Okay. I'll cancel my dive trip to Bonair in a few weeks and swim in the pool instead. Who needs those pesky distractions like the ocean. I get your argument but there are alternative points of view which, for better or worse, are held by the people who make the decisions. Nothing we think will change anything unless people are prepared to protest with their feet.

Content wise, yes. You are receiving the same content - though most concerts do not sound as good as the CD does. The extra flashing lights and crush of a large crowd doesn't change that you are still hearing the same songs. The flashing lights and large crowd are just distractions.

So you think that listening to spotify is the same as going to a concert? Same content no doubt but nothing like the same experience. Maybe the world is full of introverts now and people like sheltering in place. Who knows? They say it will take a few years to work it all out so I guess we'll see what happens.

It is, though. You're receiving the same content. Only the location has changed. And being split only increases the benefit you'd get with everyone WFH and collaborating using digital methods.

Not really. Much the same way that watching TV is not the same as going to the theater. That said, the segment I work in is split between two locations so there are plenty of us around. I get that it's different for others.

If you are WFH and you move to a new state without HR approval - regardless of if you have WFH approval - you are most likely going to lose your job. You cannot expect to just keep your job and relocate to wherever you want. That's not how it works.

@yym+1fyjcdLm
You can do all of that remotely. You can whiteboard ideas, collaborate, and pull others in as needed from the comfort of your home. You listed 0 reasons that being in the office is better.

And for the excuses that a extremely small percentage of people might be misusing their time - that is a management issue. Management should be cutting that staff out, as working in an office wont fix it. There are many more reasons those employees will find excuses not to work in an office vs at home.

There are people, who formerly worked in the office, but moved out of state during Covid. They were told they would be able to keep their jobs and remain WFH permanently. That is the case, they will be allowed to continue to WFH.

I would think an excellent case could be made if you did not move but do not want to RTO. Can Wells Fargo legally get away with treating employees differently based on their personal situations, especially employees in the same department with the same job titles?

I see a lot of people doing that and I see just as many working productively. My boss routinely stops by and we'll nut something out on the whiteboard. If we need some input from one of the business leads, we'll wander over and talk to them. Maybe we just have way too many staff doing nothing in particular. Maybe that's why our expenses are so high and why layoffs are happening.

You really think people are more productive at work? Like talking to your co-workers about the game, getting your fifth cup of coffee, walking to the cafeteria for a donut, checking out the vending machines, multiple trips to the toilet, and heading to your mailbox to check for paper mail.

It’s performative corporate theater and control by intimidation. What will the excuse be in boardrooms and shareholder meetings when productivity goes down because their employee’s work/life balance suffers? It’s about fear to evolve. Corporate America is run by cowards.🤦🏻‍♂️

OMG! Get over it. This whole wfh for almost two years spoiled everyone. The reality is you either go back to the office, or find something else remote. Chances are, you'll only have to come in at least three days a week. You'll get back in the swing of it. Life goes on.

They want us to RTO because they don’t believe listening to children screaming on conference calls, people thinking they can get away with wiggling their mice once in a while while they do laundry and watch soap operas, and claiming to work 16 hours a day because their phones are charged is really working for the company.

Yes, sure, everyone on here is more productive, not less, so blame your co-workers. But the reality is the party is ending because people had too much fun. Now it’s time to go back to work.

There's alot of favoritism with RTO. I know of 1 person hired in a location per their contract far away from their home & was mapped to a small office by their residence. I know of another person who played by the rules & asked to move & was denied, despite extenuating circumstances. One was male, the other female. The RTO shows how unethical companies (and managers) can be.
