Have you added up what RTO is going to cost you...?
I added up what the RTO/Location strategy is going to cost me for a year, compared to WFH (which is what I've been doing for 15 years, and which is what most of you have been doing for ~2 years).
The parking fees plus the gasoline costs - just those two alone - will cost me more than a month's pay.

4$ a gallon for me. I go through a tank or more each week.
I didn't think this sounded right, so I added up what it's going to cost me.
It suprised me, but it was about a months worth of pay, when added up acrost the entire year.
Big assumption @ 20 mpg. I drive a semi.
Not disagreeing with the general principle here, but how much do you all spend on gas??

$7000/52 weeks = $134/week
$134/3 days per week = $45/day
$45 will buy me around 11 gallons. At 20 mpg, that is 225 miles.
$0 thanks to my medical accommodation. Sorry for those returning but hey, at least you aren't stuck with a disease without a cure
Simple just save an hour or two each day or more from actually working to help make up the costs
This is another whiney post and if you don't like to RTO, then don't. Many of us are wanting to RTO no matter what the cost, just to keep our jobs.
Lets not forget that full time telecommuters are paid less, because not having to commute is touted as a "benefit".
I can understand somebody being angry if they accept lower pay in leue of having to commute, and then later they're told that they must commute - without a compensatory increase in pay to match their peers.

They’ll use any excuse because gas prices are not regulated. They have the best lobbyists money can buy to keep it that way.
Parking is free at my bus station too! $3.50 each way.
I guess I'm lucky that parking is free at my site. WF should be helping with parking costs, but I know they won't. :(
I'm estimating (at current gas costs) an increase in gas purchases off $125-$175/ month. The bigger loss is of course the extra 4.5 unpaid hours/week lost to commute time.
The 1% raise I got this year will definitely help manage the extra costs. I’m so fortunate.

Ukraine situation is going to drive up gas costs for the foreseeable future. Also can't get back lost time from commute/traffic.
Return to office will create a huge financial burden and greatly reduce employee quality of life

RTO won't cost me a thing because I ain't going back in an office.
Plus, I'm still listed as remote.
It's laughable how so many are still crying about rto. It's happening whether you like it or not. No one is going to change their minds because people don't want to come back. You don't, someone else will. Simple. In the meantime, be grateful you have your job and start looking for remote jobs in the interim. 🤷♀️
for those that were 100% wfh pre COVID I have some sympathy for you. Communiting is expenses. for those that did not WFH the opposite has been true the last 2 years where you have been saving on commute costs, hopefully the $200+ per month you were saving during the last 2 years was actually being saved and not spent. we were always going to go back it just appears that now it is actually happening.
With the situation in Ukraine, gas prices will skyrocket, and there may be shortages. Is this really a good time to order everyone to start driving long distances again back to the offices? Wouldn’t it be a good idea to suspend this for now? What if employees can’t afford the new gas prices?
I remember a time when there were gas shortages in Charlotte, the gas stations had none for about a week to 10 days. It was prior to 2009, and maybe hurricane related. Can’t remember why it happened. But there was no gas available in many places so we were forced to work from home. This was at legacy Wachovia.
Who knows, this may be happening again soon with the Ukraine situation.
Even without that, it seems to me that all this focus on driving and cars is counter-productive to the climate change goals. Aren’t we supposed to be focused on not driving except when essential?
Not to mention what it costs the COMPANY in terms of allocating office space to all of the people who used to permanently work from home.
Such an inexplicable move at a time when the whole company is going through an aggressive cost cutting cycle.
What happened to work life balance as well? We are going backwards under the guise of progressing.
I considered it it would cost me an additional 20k a year. And stripping us of the most valuable commodity; time. Time spent in traffic.
