RTO - Verbal vs Written

Myself and two others on my team live 50+ miles from our assigned RTO locations.

Our manager is telling me and the other two "really remote" people to just keep working from home for now. That's verbally, on phone calls. But in writing he's saying the opposite - basically passing along the boilerplate that all the managers between him and Saul are saying.

My manager seems like a nice guy when you're talking to him, but I have also learned to not trust him beyond the immediate conversation. Bluntly, he's been a bit of a snake in the past with conflicting messages verbal versus written, and it's only been the written stuff that ever gets remembered.

Our entire team just met - without our manager - and it sounds like none of us are going to go into the office, and none of us gives a d@mn about if management is tracking us or not. Nobody cares one bit. While I just keep my opinion to myself, I was suprised by how the others felt the same.

At this point I'm just hoping to get a severance due to the long distance that I'd have to travel, and escaping all the drama. But I'm also thinking that my manager may be setting me (and the other two) people for something that would thwart that.

Should I trust him, or not? I think I already know the answer...

If that's what you want, don't "hope" - policy states you qualify - but it's not going to be offered - you have to request it.

you won't get it in writing - since that would be grounds for disciplinary action against your manager. So they are doing the best that they can by telling you verbally

But you then have to take the risk...if you don't have it in writing, it doesn't exist.

Per the terms of the severance policy if you are required to go to a location more than 40 miles that is grounds for you to get a package.

Remember what James Comey did, he took contemporaneous notes of each conversation immediately after it happened.

Personally, it sounds like a trap and if you need your job, i wouldn't risk it.

Follow up with an email to make sure you're covered. I would start with just to confirm our conversation on 2/22/22, you said I continue working remotely. Please confirm that agree.

Record what is said or get it in an email... otherwise - give I or get another job.

My commute in traffic is roughly 50 minutes door to door. My manager is pro-WFH but still toes the line with company mandates. To his directs he will say come-in a couple days per week so you have an alibi but I don't care if you WFH the rest. This is how it was before covid, before and after Saul was hired. Saul shook things up for a while but after the dust settled we were WFH again, then covid hit.

check your state recording laws to see if it is a one-person consent state

Outside of the larger sites its a total cluster, no one can give you details of what possible sites to go to and middle management just refers you to the same websites that have 0 information on smaller market sites. For RTO, do follow up emails based on the verbal conversations so you have a record of it, probably will not help bit its something.

Multiple people in management do not agree with RTO, however that decision is not theirs to make, so they have to follow the rules. Badge swipes will be checked. Your manager might be ok with you working from home, but up the chain might be a different story. If your manager is communicating the official policy in writing, your manager is covered when badge swipes are checked.

Don’t trust him, but you will not be alone if you don’t RTO on the date the old white guys says you should. There may not be power in verbal direction, but there is power in numbers.

Heck NO! If it's not in writing don't believe a thing your manager says.

I would trust the group consensus and your own instinct.

It's nice to know how your entire group feels. There's probably many more groups in the bank who feel the same way. Management and the employees are playing chicken. Being at the helm of the largest consumer bank failure in history would be pretty epic for Charlie.
