Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Are you more dissatisfied with your manager or with the company in general?

Many people are unhappy. That’s a fact. But where is this dissatisfaction coming from?

Most of the people that i talk to from other teams have the most complaints about how their manager treats them or how the work is conducted within a certain team. Do you think you wouldn't be this unhappy if you had a better manager, or do you think that the culture is poisoned to that degree that it would be the same, regardless of the person that you report to?

Absolutely the company is the concern. Manager, and 1 and 2 above, are fantastic.

Wells Fargo is great place.
I never had a problem with getting issues resolved. My manager likes to show favoritism, micro manage and rude.

It'd be interesting to see some sort of results from a survey, but they don't release those.

Company. There is no strategic vision. Senior management seems to be focused on itself. Does not genuinely care for either employees or customers. Limited opportunity to advance your career.

You "work on an amazing group of people"? Would love to know that looks like. No wonder the bank is f***ed.

This reminds me of the old annual surveys, called Q12(?) for a long time. One of the questions was always around how you feel about working with your manager. I was always happy with my manager. But they never had the ba--s to ask about how you feel about working at WF (or maybe I forgot that)?
Anyway, I do remember thinking at the time that it was a crock. Because I thought somewhere between my manager and the CEO something had gone horribly wrong but the survey never addressed that.

Company - 100%! I would be perfectly content staying in my current role being at home. Instead, the angst over being treated like a two year old and being forced into an office where none of my co-workers are has me highly distracted and my drive to be a top performer is non existent. My last review was Exceeds. I am a great asset and now I spend more time worrying about how to get out than how to excel at my job. Way to go C-Suite!

My manager is great, absolutely no complaints. 100% of the problems come down from the executive hacks, who repeatedly demonstrate that we are little more than an expense to be eliminated. Some of us remember when the company had a pension and a 401(k). It's been nothing but benefits cuts ever since. Pretty much every year is an exercise in guessing what benefit we'll lose next. The retiree-screwing change to the bonus plan being the most recent. No change to the executive golden parachute deals though, those are safe and sound.

Manager is scheming gas lighter.
Company is greedy, corrupt dinosaur.

Miss my prior, thriving companies and am in the process of leaving.

I am quite lucky. I really like my manager. I don't like having to go into the office because I lose time out of the day due to traffic and preparing clothes for the next day. I work longer hours if not in the office. So the company gets less work from me while RTO.

"Most people are dissatisfied"
Huh? Nah... not by a long shot. I checked, and most people are in fact quite happy.
I get paid very well and work on an amazing team of people.

It's both for me-- direct mgr and the new executive team. I agree with so many of the comments in this topic.
Funny how there are darn near daily new hires for the exec level but not at the contributor level... just my observation

Primarily company - authentic strategy, goals and objectives seem impossible for it to articulate. As a result, it doesn't really matter about good or bad managers - managers really are irrelevant, and the pandemic really helped illustrate that. I imagine there's a segment of managers relieved to be RTO in hopes of rekindling some kind of relevance.

I think I was a good manager. I cared, I tried, I didn’t micromanage, but offered guidance, strategy, input, and edits when it was asked for or I thought necessary. My team seemed to like me, at least to my face. I moved to an individual contributor role doing less for more money. Are there times I miss managing? Yes. But they do not set managers up to succeed here, even the ones trying hard to succeed will fail regularly.

Before I came to WF (nearly 20 years ago) this company had a great reputation and was a place that people aspired to join.

Now, WF is the poster child of scandalous corporate behavior.

The entire management culture is rotten, and that starts with the front line managers and goes all the way up the chain.

People want to do good work. Everyone who works here started out wanting to good work. Everyone who works here was believed (by whoever hired them) to be the best person for their job.

Dissatisfaction with your manager vs dissatisfaction with the company isn't an "either-or". It's both.

Perpetually dissatisfied with the company, and that began well before the current rounds of shafting employees. It's a corporation, it will never take great care of it's employees. Management will see to that since it's at odds with what's good for them (maximum shareholder "value").

Unfortunately the stress of what the current executive management team has laid on their subordinates has turned my pretty good manager into a disappointing manager. Sure, my manager has taken good care of me, but as a team overall we are suffering due to their unwillingness to make difficult decisions. So we keep drifting into more dangerous water when we could have rode some uncomfortable waves and then been in the clear.

My manager. I feel like they watched Bad Bosses and Silicon Valley and were like "Oh that is an amazing way to manage!" I could not make up some of the wacky stuff they do.

I once had a manager that went to every meeting also attended by his staff. He would brag about be double and triple booked in every slot on everyday. I asked - When to you have time to manage your people? Only a blank stare was returned. This taught me to be self-sufficient and not expert my manger to know or care about me and what might be my needs. Sad, but true.

I have not had a 1-on-1 with my manager in months. Just occasional team meetings and some IMs. I have never felt so disconnected. I fear I may be getting marginalized.

I'd say the company in general. If you want to compete with fintech and crypto, you have to be a tech company. Here we have a bunch of begrudging suits that want things to return to wearing suits and ties and doing all business with an in person English-speaking handshake. It hasn't been like that for a long time and won't be again. That was a different time and none of us should want to return to that if we want to be successful. Now it's 24-hour world-wide business done at any location in any attire and in multiple languages. Offices are a thing of the past. We should be more like Silicon Valley and less like Wall Street. Lots of obstacles need to be removed in management before we are headed down that road though.

Trying to be a great manager in this environment is so demoralizing. Strong leaders are leaving the organization or moving to individual roles.
