Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Many RTO exceptions being made

I know execs don't want us talking to each other and learning about inequities, but...

I spoke with 3 colleagues last week who have personally reached out to Saul (SVB; decisionmaker) complaining about RTO hardship. and they got exceptions. Just a week (5 days of their choosing) of in-office work per quarter!

This inequity is BS! Either apply RTO standard to everyone or not at all.

Many of us have successfully WFH for over a decade and we're tired of being treating like children.

I can't speak for others, but the company closed my local campus during COVID, and the hub they'd love to send me to is greater than 40 miles. The company has some difficult choices to make regarding team members in similar situations: they can continue to allow us to work remotely (the exception of which you speak), or they can force us into distant hubs and then lose us when we invoke the material change policy that will trigger severance.

Managed with so much incompetence, favoritism, illogical reasoning and lack of transparency, it's majorly irresponsible in a time of economic uncertainty and pandemic to treat employees like this.

and they are still hiring people in non-hub cities, so they bend the rules all the time

Everything we're hearing is "business as usual, and continue WFH".

I think the layers and layers and layers of management are so confused that they don't know what to say. Information coming down is muddled and confused. Ditto for information going back up.

The spoken messages on the floor are 100% opposite of what people at SVB's level are saying.

I will keep WFH until they fire me - which isn't going to happen. I'm not worried at all.

Same - I'm looking at a $600 increase each month paying for parking and gas - and that's just doing the 3/2 office visits.

? Nobody has tried to prevent you from talking with anyone else about your situation.
If you ever really feel like someone is trying to squelch the free exchange of information amongst employees regarding salary, benefits or other treatment... don't stand still for it.

In our group, the people who got the exceptions were either the ones who were irreplaceable or who lived more than 60 miles away from an office. The ones who put in for office reassignment were told “we’re working on it,” and then no, and then wait until after things settle down. For our group, the person at the Saul level and HR were both saying no to WFH exceptions.

I don't think SVB is the bad guy here. He seems to have backed away from RTO, but has been overruled by Powell.

I don't know anyone who has asked SVB for an exception that has been denied.

If you are under SVB and you are RTO, chances are it was someone else in your management chain that wants you back in.

If you go to Saul does your manager have to approve? Our manager is not willing to submit on our behalf because he doesn't want to be seen as someone not backing RTO to leadership, regardless of hardship. He won't deny but he won't help

I am resigning. Not worth 2h/day commute, gas expenses and additional childcare costs for me. They can rehire me at 50% more if needed because my pay isn't reasonable either. Good luck trying to backfill at that rate. Be careful what you wish for.

Could you shine some light on “how to ask correctly”?

I got one from SVB. You have to know how to ask, and you can’t be dead weight.

Manager coldly announced "no exceptions were approved to be closer to the office", then said no resubmits for 6 months. Then the next week after a few resignations, said all requests were resubmitted- nothing around here makes sense. They never stick to anything or honor anything.

Yeah, extenuating circumstances here- if you are not a "favorite", you don't get the exception. I resigned.

We get the Diversity training to treat customers as adults and WF. Proceeds to treat their employees like children. Someone should tell WF that the employees may also be customers. After our 401k matches, employees are shareholders and Charlie needs to listen to us.
